has anyone on here participated in rally cross? is it as fun as it looks? I am strongly considering breaking in the A8 at one. It is currently is way too nice of condition to be a beater and I think this might help fix that.
It is fun. I havent been able to do it for a few years due to other projects, but we keep talking about going back to it. The car will definitely take a beating. Also, you will probably want snow tires.
This was a few years back when I actually had a rallyx car.
at 1:12 did you hit the cone or mis it?
Also I think of all those control arms and think how expensive rallyX in an A8 sounds
No, no, no. Tell me you’re not serious? OK, cool it was just a joke.
Finally a thread I can relate to. When the FLR rallyx series started years ago guys from RIT would come down in their new Subaru’s. They put layers of painters tape on them which did little to protect them from getting the snot beat out of them. Don’t even think about bringing a car you don’t plan on trailering home. The Subaru’s would actually do pretty good. That is till they nearly all rolled the tires off the nice new rims. And running with the windows open filled them with an inch of nice gritty dust. Inevitably as they got on the road to go home (if they still could) they sounded a whole lot worse for wear. Best to run a beater or borrow someone else’s beater.
Even bringing a prepped rally car puts it through it’s paces. Every so often there’s a significant whump. They’ve tamed it down a lot but it used to be you could easily catch air and come down in ruts. Those with “street” cars could average around 40 or so, the rally cars would average 60 at times if it was a fast course. In the video below that was the last event that was by the old group who ran it. I think the average I did that day was 63. Most people back off way before that though.
It is an absolute blast. Watching as a spectator though is like watching an autox, not much of a thrill. But snag a ride in a rally car at speed and you’ll be taking care of the racing stripe in your shorts. I’ve had a couple codrivers get woozy. Only one ever got sick fortunately. It takes time to stop so they can throw up. Can’t win that way.
I say do it!

OK, why doesn’t the video show up?
I was thinking about picking up a flatbed again so I can drag this thing around without worry of breaking it I will just have to find one long enough for this car. I think the only prep I will do to it for rally is a armor plate for the oil pan. oil coolers are really not needed for the short runs of a rally event like this. I can steal the new snows off from my S4 as long as the narrow 205’s have the weight capacity to handle small jumps. The A8 will be lighter than my S4 but these are not exactly high end tires. It should be a good time!
what do you plan to use as a tow vehicle? it stinks your tow dolly definitely wont help here
When/where is the event?
So the video won’t embed for some reason, so here’s the > link <
I want to be there to see this A8 run. Unfortunately the next event is the 26th and I will be out of town that weekend. The calendar doesn’t show the next event after that. But it’s time to get out and run myself.

Actually with short high rev runs it will indeed get hot. You make one run, come back to the line and sit for a couple minutes, run again and repeat. Without air flow engine temps do tend to rise fast.
I have not been to one. I assumed it would be a bit like autocross. Are the runs tight back to back? It is not really that big of a deal to throw a cooler on it
There are two groups. While one group runs the other works. Then they switch. Depending on how many cars there are usually you get 3-4 back to back runs. So 45 sec to 1 minute depending on the course layout. Then wait for maybe 4-5 others, then run again. After the first set(s) there is usually a break for lunch and any necessary repairs. After lunch another set. If there is time after that then open runs.

For a “stock” vehicle:
Prep as for an autox
The most aggressive heavy tires you can muster. Stock tires will tend to roll off the rims so?
Undercarriage protection. Even small yumps canncause bottoming. There may be small rocks that get kicked up.
Dust. Plan for it
For sure I am forgetting a whole bunch, but it’s late and I have the flu.
If you think of something just ask
I’ve done it plenty with leased cars that I didn’t give a fuck about.
It is pretty abusive but clean it up afterwards and you’re ok.
Don’t forget to put at least 40 psi into the tires. Maybe even more.
It’s fun.
I remember back in the beginning a lot of guys were running rentals. I thought they decided to nix that. I know for awhile you had to show them a registration. I don’t remember being asked in awhile though.
The higher tire pressure helps keep the tires from rolling off. If it gets rutted though nothing helps other than a stiif sidewall like a rally tire.
It is a blast. Not to stir up the waters but a whole lot more fun than autox.

I am going to try like hell to be ready for it. I have to put a rack in the car and replace springs, struts and all 8 controll arms (which are all on hand other than the rack) I really want to find or buy a trailer for the event so I don’t have to worry about the car. Oh and get a skid plate to protect the fragile oil pan that audi likes to hang out front and center.
Edit. I will steal the snows from my S4 and air them up a bunch and that should do the trick for tires.
Big e does this in his year old fiesta. Brand new car
we put a light bar on it last month and he runs with some snow tires. It looks pretty fun. The inside of his car is so dusty lol
I’m heading to buffalo tonight to get another E30 that might be good for this
Still trying to understand the A8 thing here…
+1 on this. I expect video.
Very bummed I can’t make that weekend. Any word on the next event after this?
What is to understand. It is cheap, powerfull, and cheap, and not that heavy… did I mention it was cheap?
