Thanks everyone for your input, I expect more as my car progresses along on it’s project.
However, returning to the topic at hand, here’s the update on the sr20det swap.
I got the motorset from Jay (known as spooolin on the forums). Drove up to his shop in Tavistock on Saturday and got straight to work. Everything was actually going pretty smoothly, no complications in getting the KA out of my s14. Jay’s a great guy to work with, he knew that I was not mechanically inclined, and wanted to learn while he did the swap. He took the time to explain some of the things he was doing, and by the end, I got myself in there and helped out with some minor things. For me it was an awesome experience, and now feel more comfortable navigating around the engine bay.
However, as with any swaps, we ran into a couple of ‘situations’.
While I was scrambling to get some parts for the swap, I totally forgot to get a downpipe, so my exhaust wouldn’t hook on because of the different bolt pattern. Also, while mounting the FMIC, that’s where I encountered the battery problem, and realized I’ll need a thinner battery in order to allow the piping to connect to the throttle body. I also need an actual sr20 a/c compressor, since the KA didn’t bolt on. (I did have one bolt in there, but the thread was all worn so the bolt didn’t hold the compressor in place)
But other than that, it was a real standard swap, everything was plug and play. However the FMIC problem along with the exhaust proved to take too long, so we couldn’t complete the entire swap in one day.
By the time I left his shop it was already midnight, and had to drive back in a snowstorm from Tavistock to Toronto.
I’ll get pics of the swap up soon, just need to finish uploading all of the pics.
for now I’m just running factory boost, so as for now, the only things outstanding
- BOV (using a stock talon bov, not the prettiest thing, but functional for my application anyways)
- downpipe (Jay is probably lifting it from his sr setup, since he has the RB now)
- Thinner battery so we can mount the intercooling piping
- (not priority) ac compressor (anybody have any idea how much this goes for?)
stuff for later on (probably spring)
- koyo rad
- larger injectors
- adjustable fpr
- walbro fuel pump
and whatever else comes up that i need…lol
but anyways, I’m excited, Jay advised me that it had fired up the first time without any problems. So I’ll be returing at the end of this week to pick it up.
This marks the end of my ‘ricer’ look, lol.
