That’s the exact reason you’re seeing governments push these programs right now. As our overall fleet MPG increases their overall tax revenue decreases.
Right now it’s not a huge deal because electric cars represent such a small percentage of vehicle miles traveled but if/when they ever take off the model of collecting highway tax at the gas pump is going to have to change.
can’t they just check your mileage when you get an inspection each year or something? Seems like a lot of work to see how many miles you drive. Has to be an easier way.
One possible way it could benefit is if there are still savings. It could be that the overall per-mile cost is still less than the across the board gas tax now. You would have to run the numbers and find out.
Also, while the tax may be higher with this proposed plan, you’re still using less fuel with a Prius than you would with a WRX. I would be surprised if the difference in taxes is greater than the cost savings of getting 50 mpg over 18 mpg.

This idea has been in this exact thread for the past 6 years.
Isn’t the idea behind the gas tax to generate funds to keep the roads in shape as well? Shouldn’t that revenue be taken from a source now that actually dictates the mileages of road driven since technology has progressed enough to do so?
There is a proposal in Illinois for the state to put a device on cars to see how many miles citizens are driving.
The state would take that data to use in order to charge a tax on drivers depending on miles driven. It’s all in an effort to make money because the state is losing out on gas tax revenue thanks to more fuel efficient cars on the road.
Will this impact all vehicles on the road including freight/Semi Trucks? If so, fantastic… (Sarcasm) Just means our good will continue to go up in price as the freight companies will pass the expense off.
