Recommending a key shop for "chip" car keys.

So, with the late model Fords, they all have a chip key on it.

My car only came with 1 key and no FOB.

I bought 1 blank key on ebay ($12), and one Ford FOB on ebay. ($10)…

Followed the instructions in the owners manual to program the FOB, that took literally two minutes.

The instructions for adding a key are tougher. You need to have 2 working programmed keys to program a 3rd key, so I needed to find a shop with a machine to program a second key for me.

#1 Called the dealer to get the highest price. They told me $140 for a key and they would not touch an ebay key.

#2 Called Suburban Lock and key. The woman was rude to me on the phone, ended up giving me a price of $99 and they would not touch my ebay key.

#3 Ended up calling Advanced Lock & Key on Englewood in Tonawanda. Both the dad and the son were working there, super cool guys.

They told me $49.99 and about 30 minutes. I brought the car by, and talked to the son for about 30 minutes about cars and other stuff. He has the machine that plugs into the OBD2 port to program new keys.

He gave me a new aftermarket key and it worked perfect the first time.

He ended up telling me that he had some problems with ebay keys, so he won’t program them, but he put the cuts on the ebay key for me for nothing and told me that I could program it myself using the owners manual.

I took the car home with two working keys, and successfully programmed the third ebay key in two minutes, following instructions in the owners manual.

I had the same problem for my car, ended up bringing it to the dealer. Bought the Key off ebay for $85 and the dealer cut and programmed it for $35. There was a mobile guy and he was charging me just $80 to cut it, forgot who it was though.

may have to give them a call. I need a key for my Subaru. West herr quoted about $120 for the key and programming.

Good to know

LMK if you find somewhere cheaper than the dealer. I need a new key and fob for my forester.
