Remote start on a manual trans?

Do you have one? Do you like it? Did you install it yourself or have it done? How much?

I really miss getting into a nice warm car in the morning like I did when the Expedition with the CompuStar was my DD. I know it’s little more complicated though to install one in a manual trans car. I believe CompuStar had one where the exit procedure ensured that the car was in neutral and only if none of the doors were opened since you got out would the remote start work. I think you park, shift to neutral, set ebrake, get out, lock doors, then the engine would turn off automatically.

EDIT:
For clarification, no, I’m not going to “just cut the clutch safety switch and try to remember to never leave it in gear”. Either it’s done right so it’s safe or I’m not doing it.

Or get an E36, doesn’t require the clutch to be depressed to start. I use the Ebrake instead or putting it in gear.

I had shops locally refuse to install a remote start on my civic 5 speed. BUMS. :stuck_out_tongue:

yeah JayS…just go buy a shitty old BMW

you can just bypass the clutch safety switch

I have remote start on my manual trans Integra. Just had to short the neutral switch wire on the remote start brains as well as the clutch switch wires in the car…and don’t leave the car in gear. I know a guy who remote started a car in gear and it went clear across the parking lot…into a Jeep. :stuck_out_tongue:

I put one in my S4, it wasnt a compustar. The procedure that armed mine as follows

leave car running
pull up ebrake
tap the brake twice
parking lights flashed twice to recognize the car was ready to exit
once I got out of the car, and closed the door the car would shut off and would be ready for remote starting.

I would not install without something like this

I don’t think any shop will do it for insurance reasons, I wanted to get one installed on my Eclipse and that’s what I was told.

What year? My 1997 does.

Easy to bypass anyways, some cars you can just unplug the switch like my old Eclipse, some you have to jump the wires.

Ok, let me clarify.

I don’t want some ghetto rigged ticking time bomb where I just cut the clutch safety switch and try to make sure I never leave the car in gear.

Funky had one in his S2k that worked like what Poopra described. That’s what I’m looking for, but also looking for someone to install it.

BDR5oh. if you need the compustar unit, hit me up.

Yeah, I should have thought to PM him. He did the install on my wife’s Prizm and I was really happy with it.

Not sure, but my 91 E30 didn’t have a switch and my 96 E36 doesn’t have a switch. I guess BMW just assumes their drivers aren’t idiots and actually check that its not in gear.

stereo advantage had a good deal with the compu star ones last year when i went to check them out
they have the procedural thing just like you described, and the guys there do great work

ive thought about getting one

but i just start the car when i take the dog for his morning walk. 10min later when i leave its nice and toasty.

2 keyfobs ftw

yeah … just call me 310-9347 … is this gonna be on the Goat ??

I have a compustar on the STi and installed it myself early last winter. I found it on ebay for ~200 and it came with a two way remote and a few other bells and whistles. The install was the same as it would be for an automatic, except for the ebrake wire. The exit procedure is as follows:

engage e-brake, leave the car in neutral, remove keys and exit the car (no particular order)

Upon exiting, the car will continue to run until the door closes (and presumable you are no longer in it). This is how the starter knows it’s safe to re-start automatically. If your foot is on the brake any time after the key is out of the ignition it will not allow it to set readiness, and the car will stop running. If you have a two way remote, it will tell you that the car is set by beeping.

I think it’s a great system, and quite fool-proof. The install ended up taking me almost 8 hours mostly due to tracking wires, and Subaru anti-theft mechanisms. It was completely worth it.

i had one done… pm coldaccord and get his friend daves number

 good guy… good price.

EDIT: or rainbow… i had this done like 3-4 years ago in my g/fs car.

Does it matter if you have a manual transmission car with manual locks?

I would like to stay warm this winter, I hate staring my car like a fucking animal in the winter.

I’m moving to Phoenix next year, and it would be nice to have a well chilled car to get into as well.

What are we looking at for a price to get one installed?

Getting one with an alarm should be about the same amount of money, its little or no more work to install.

manual locks arent a problem, i had actuators and keyless added and remote start with passlock for gm… total cost was like 160 installed… iirc…

You mean you don’t like pushing the button and watching your car go through the garage door in the morning?

“Hmmm, the car starting sounded a little louder than normal this morning.” Oh, smashed through the garage door, rolled across the street and swiped the pole, then goes through your neighbors’ living room across the street. Then you remember, you forgot to turn the heat on last night anyways.

EPIC FAIL!!!
:fu:

my buddy bought a 5 speed s10 that had remote start. it also had a dent in the front bumper. defineatly get one that has some kind of procedure like that so that its foolproof.
