Do you have one? Do you like it? Did you install it yourself or have it done? How much?
I really miss getting into a nice warm car in the morning like I did when the Expedition with the CompuStar was my DD. I know it’s little more complicated though to install one in a manual trans car. I believe CompuStar had one where the exit procedure ensured that the car was in neutral and only if none of the doors were opened since you got out would the remote start work. I think you park, shift to neutral, set ebrake, get out, lock doors, then the engine would turn off automatically.
EDIT:
For clarification, no, I’m not going to “just cut the clutch safety switch and try to remember to never leave it in gear”. Either it’s done right so it’s safe or I’m not doing it.
I have remote start on my manual trans Integra. Just had to short the neutral switch wire on the remote start brains as well as the clutch switch wires in the car…and don’t leave the car in gear. I know a guy who remote started a car in gear and it went clear across the parking lot…into a Jeep.
I put one in my S4, it wasnt a compustar. The procedure that armed mine as follows
leave car running
pull up ebrake
tap the brake twice
parking lights flashed twice to recognize the car was ready to exit
once I got out of the car, and closed the door the car would shut off and would be ready for remote starting.
Not sure, but my 91 E30 didn’t have a switch and my 96 E36 doesn’t have a switch. I guess BMW just assumes their drivers aren’t idiots and actually check that its not in gear.
stereo advantage had a good deal with the compu star ones last year when i went to check them out
they have the procedural thing just like you described, and the guys there do great work
I have a compustar on the STi and installed it myself early last winter. I found it on ebay for ~200 and it came with a two way remote and a few other bells and whistles. The install was the same as it would be for an automatic, except for the ebrake wire. The exit procedure is as follows:
engage e-brake, leave the car in neutral, remove keys and exit the car (no particular order)
Upon exiting, the car will continue to run until the door closes (and presumable you are no longer in it). This is how the starter knows it’s safe to re-start automatically. If your foot is on the brake any time after the key is out of the ignition it will not allow it to set readiness, and the car will stop running. If you have a two way remote, it will tell you that the car is set by beeping.
I think it’s a great system, and quite fool-proof. The install ended up taking me almost 8 hours mostly due to tracking wires, and Subaru anti-theft mechanisms. It was completely worth it.
You mean you don’t like pushing the button and watching your car go through the garage door in the morning?
“Hmmm, the car starting sounded a little louder than normal this morning.” Oh, smashed through the garage door, rolled across the street and swiped the pole, then goes through your neighbors’ living room across the street. Then you remember, you forgot to turn the heat on last night anyways.
my buddy bought a 5 speed s10 that had remote start. it also had a dent in the front bumper. defineatly get one that has some kind of procedure like that so that its foolproof.
