Used right-hand-drive cars from Japan raise concerns in B.C.

(CBC) - They are in excellent mechanical shape with low mileage, but used right-hand-drive vehicles from Japan are raising safety concerns in British Columbia.

Provincial officials are concerned the vehicles might be dangerous in passing situations and have asked Transport Canada to step in.

Mike Woods, manager for vehicle inspections in the province, said that while there’s no evidence of accidents caused by right-hand-drive vehicles, officials need more time to determine their safety record.

“There is some concern, and the Insurance Corp. of B.C. is probably looking at that quite closely, and I’m certain that the Insurance Bureau of Canada is also looking into it,” Woods said.

Some officials worry the cars may be dangerous when passing because the driver’s range of vision is limited on the outside of the road.

All cars imported from Japan - where motorists drive on the left-hand side of the road - are at least 15 years old because federal laws place restrictions on newer cars.

However, B.C. officials have asked Transport Canada to extend that to 25 years in an attempt to reduce the number of right-hand-drive cars entering the province.

About 175 Japanese right-hand-drive cars are registered in B.C. every month - a number that has grown steadily, provincial officials say.

One of them is owned by Thomas Nottelman, who imported his 16-year-old Toyota Corolla and several other cars from Japan. Because Japan has tough mechanical regulations and regular inspections, he said, its second-hand cars are prized.

Many of them have “never seen an accident, they’ve never seen dirt, they certainly don’t have any rust, and they’re exceptionally low mileage,” Nottelman said.

“So you can’t buy anything comparable here, unless you happen to find a little old lady’s car.”

They say it right here… lol

If this shit passes… the curruption is seeping.

But I have heard about this shit for years… lolllllllll

Its not so new debate, but its funny. Stuff changes when it hits “Mainstream” media. Personally, The guy at the bottom has a point. They’re 10x better than the stuff you get here for the same price and 100x easier to find what you’d like to drive.

:twocents:

man that will suck if I cant get an r34 in 2012…eeerr something like that lol

Something’s going to change, that’s a given, …the real question is, when?..

…I hope no time soon.

Agreed! I have my doubts weither or not we’ll get to see the R34 or S15 before it happens, but hopefully we’ll get the R33 and MKIV Supra…on a side note, anyone know when they’ll both be available?

pretty sure that gen supra will be able to next year and the r33 wont be until 2009
but i suck at math soooo that is my 10 cents eerrr somethin like that :E

both the R33 and MKIV will be legal next year… expect to lots of those

Next year as in 07…or 08?

fairly certain they were made in late 1993 sooo 15 plus 93= o shit i hate math
ummm 108 soooo 2008

yeah cant wait to see the rarity and value of the MKIV supra get destroyed just like the MR2, 300ZX and now the FD3S , its great when evry 16 year old kid with 8 grand of his parents money can have one, The ones driving the RHD vehicles in the winter because they cant realy afford them are the best. Personaly I think it would be awesome if they raised it to 25 years.

Honestly, who da fuck cares who drives them or not ?!

Do you purchase vehicles based on the rarity or what social class of society also drives it or not ?! or how much they are valued at ?!

Jokes on you, faggot.

who cares? me and probably evry other person who spends 30+ U.S to get one. Alot of people purchase these cars because they are unique and rare, its not only me.

Personally I feel that giving a novice driver a car with a high power to weight ratio and then also putting them on a side of the car that limits there vision at the same time is a bad idea. It’s more a problem with maturity and experience. It’s not true for all new drivers. But on average I feel it’s accurate. Another factor you have to look at from an insurance perspective is that as soon as a car that is built in Japan and not here gets in a serious accident it’s written off. There are 2 reasons for that.

A: The parts to correctly repair the car are just not available
B: The cars are not built to the same safety standards and when they get hit the damage is much more severe.

Less experienced drivers are more likely to get into accidents, the more young people you have driving these cars. The more people you’re going to have trying to get importing stopped. What black-s13 said about winter is accurate aswell ,adding poor road conditions just adds to the problem.

hey fuckbag, he doesnt give a fuck about inexperienced drivers getting high powered cars or concerned about other drivers safety, read his posts, he is just sad because other people purchasing the same cars as he has…and stop typing essays to everything, its sad how you try so hard to look smart at every post and you must love hear yourself talking… what I typed has nothing to do with your reply…

I am sick of dumbfucks talking around like how they started the IMPORTING JDM’s fad. Boo fucking hoo cry me a river that you were a retard who spent 30k + usd on a mk4 and now they are going to be available for much cheaper due to jdm market… what are you the spokesperson for mk4’s in edmonton and just because you purchased, other people are not allowed to or shouldnt?! goes for every jdm/sports car…

so sick of hearing, “OMG ALL THESE KIDS HAVE SILVIAS TOO LIKE WTF I REMEMBER WHEN IT WAS JUST ME AND MY BUDDY LYKE WE STARTED THIS SHIT” , there is always someone who has done it or started it way before than you do…

or basically saying “WELL I LOVE MY CAR, I ENJOY DRIFTING/AUTO-X/DRAGGING WITH IT, I TRULLY ENJOY THE FEELING OF THE SPEED AND AGILITY BUT I DONT WANT TO HAVE IT ANYMORE BECAUSE MY NEIGHBOURS 16 YEAR OLD SON JUST GOT ONE TOO!”
who da fuck cares…

its called the fucking market and mainstream trend, anyone with money can purchase whatever they want whenever they want no matter who they are, 16 year old or 60 year old…

and they can do whatever the fuck they want with their jdm, driving thorough winter or not…

AND YES IF YOU ARE PURCHASING A SPORTS VEHICLE BASED ON HOW UNIQUE/RARE/NOBODY ELSE HAS IT FACTOR, I QUESTION YOUR SENSE OF ENTHUSIASM TO MOTORSPORTS GREATLY… dont fucking buy shit to prove other people something… you degenerate homo.

I personally hope they wont raise it to 25 years, I hope that they should not limit whatsoever so our market can get fluttered by these much cheaper, better condition japanese market counterparts, so we wont have to be paying 5000 dollar for rusted out ka24 240sx’s, or we wont have to hunt down a poor old lady with her flawless usdm fc3s, or wont have to drive out to some farm to check out some farmers ae86 that was parked for the last 10 years… and maybe if we have enough jdm’s in the city, people will take their heads out of their asses and realize that its just another car/object and they can stop becoming a huge fucking deal…

boom

slide you seem like the whiney little rich kid fag that we are talking about, seems like we hit a soft spot, I would love to meet up with you in person and discuss this further, we have a grown up discussion and you throw in your 12 year old pollitics and reasoning freaking out and playing the internet tuff guy bullshit, get a life.

yea you are right, I am the whiny 16 year old little rich fag kid who just got his first jdm…

and yea, I am taking you on your offer, pm me a time and place and I’ll come discuss it with you face to face.

and yea, you have such a grown up discussion “other kids buying the exactly same car that I have, therefore its not cool anymore” or “they must be driving their jdms in winter because they cant afford other cars”. You must be the wisest grown up in the block.

Fuck you homo, pm me a spot and time.

I was sharing my opinion. Which is something people are free to do here. If you don’t like it, to bad.
