Just hours after officials with Remington Outdoor Co. announced it would locate a new gun manufacturing facility in Huntsville, a New York lawmaker is pointing to his state’s stringent firearm laws as a reason the business isn’t coming there.
Republican State Sen. James Seward said he was glad Remington would keep its existing facilities in Ilion, NY, where the firearms maker employs more than 1,300 people. The “underlying story,” Seward said is why the company chose to move its new production to Alabama as opposed to keeping it in New York.
“Clearly, the SAFE-Act played a role, hindering efforts to bring this expansion to New York. I opposed the onerous and reactionary measure when it was rushed into law, and feared it would lead to job loss,” Seward said. “Now, just over a year later, we are no safer, a portion of the law has been found unconstitutional, other portions cannot be enforced, and Remington is expanding - out of state.”
New York lawmakers passed the SAFE Act in January 2013, enacting what Gov. Andrew Cuomo said was the “toughest gun laws in the nation.”
The law, passed just two weeksafter the school shooting at Newton, Conn., includes restrictions on automatic weapons and increases the penalties for illegal guns. (You can read the details of the law here.) The law also bans the sale of certain guns, including Remington’s AR-15.

After the law was passed, Remington released a statementvia its Facebook page
“We believe the NY SAFE Act is unconstitutional and was passed in a questionable fashion. Remington and its employees worked diligently with pro-gun legislators to prevent the Act’s passage. We actively participated in the Albany rallies and drove the letter-writing campaign to stop this anti-gun legislation,” Remington said.
At the time, the company acknowledged the law could impact Remington’s operations in the state.
“While we are unhappy with the misguided acts of our elected politicians, Remington will not run or abandon its loyal and hardworking 1,300 employees without considerable thought and deliberation. Laws can be overturned and politicians voted out of office, but the decisions we make today will affect our people, their families and entire communities for generations,” it noted.
On Monday, Remington’s Facebook page was filled with a different sort of message. The site contained numerous well wishes from those glad to see the company’s new facility in Alabama.
“Welcome to Huntsville, Alabama. Thank you Gov. Cuomo!” one poster said.

“Today it is with great relief, and pride as a Remington owner that I say thank you for supporting freedom and standing up for the 2nd Amendment by voting with your feet,” another said. “The Second Amendment cannot stand if those in the firearms industry to do not stand with gun owners and put their foot down to our rights being stripped unconstitutionally.”

“Welcome to Huntsville, Alabama. Thank you Gov. Cuomo!” one poster said.

That’s about the gist of it.

I believe it’s not a question of “if”, but “when”, Remmy dumps NYS altogether.
