Rough idle

Hey guys, my car (with sr20det) is some major idling issues. I have the factory turbo with a walboro fuel pump. At idle, the car literally shakes. And when I’m in gear at around 2700-3200 rpm, it shakes alot, especially when I’m in 5th gear at 3000 rpm. Could anyone tell me if it’s the timing that’s off or am I running rich? I haven’t got it tuned yet and I notice that when let go of the gas or downshifting, I get backfire.
Anyone?

come on guys

I don’t know about SR, but check out the thread below - may be relevant.

possibly a vacuum leak? I dont really know too much about engines and troubleshooting them, but those are a couple things that came to mind first.

take your car to a MECHANIC…

that’s jus defeats the purpose of asking questions the “technical” section of the board. Anymore constructive ideas?
s1495, I checked the thread and seems like the guy nevered posted the solution to the problem, so back to square one!

go to nicoclub.com…they will help you…but search before you ask questions…there is a large amount of information there for you…hope this helps

Yeah the other thread just said tighten s8 up + check timing…

So try these:

  1. check your timing
  2. check your maf - borrow someone else’s and try it…

try this thread

It was the MAF FIXED*

cool…will definitely try that out.
thanks guys

Sounds like a bad plug or injector.

Agreed.
Generally if it’s a MAF you’d be in limp mode and only rev to 2500.

Uh okay I hope you dont’ mind but I’ll throw my problem in here instead of starting a new thread.

At a standstill my idle is great, perfeclty still at 700 rpm. But then when I go drive, it dips really low (like it will bounce between 300 rpm and 800 rpm) whenever I put it a neutral…especially if I brake hard… after driving for a long time (like 30+ minutes) it eventually gets fine and doesn’t dip anymore and stays fine, but this always happens at the beginning of driving.

The car has never died or anything but I don’t think it’s good for it to bounce around like that…?

Any ideas ?

Dirty IACV

alright, time to reown my thread.
I read that fuel injector cleaners are bad??? What makes them harmful to the FI?
What is the alternative to this (getting professionally done)? how do they do it?

My car had the same problem. I got some water into the disty. Went to Crappy Tire and grabbed the ignition wire thing majigy (it’s supposed to dry out the water) and the problem was fixed. Not sure if it’s the same thing but the can is like $4. Obviously if you didn’t wash the car or drive possibly get water into the engine bay, it’s not the problem.

With the above problems in my car, I forgot to mention that I’m getting REALLY crap-ass mileage on the car…I was hitting jus above 300 km when my tank was almost empty, but the tank light didn’t come on. This combined with the backfiring I’m getting would lead me to assume that I’m running really rich and I can smell fuel when I exit the car after a drive.

What kind of mileage are you guys getting with your turbo SR?

Also, just wanna throw another question to you guys, when does the “empty gas tank” light go on? when the tank has absolutely NO fuel left or when it has like 10 litres left? reason being, it could be that the gauge cluster is faulty and giving me bad readings…I jus need to get some more info to start eliminating possibilities that might contribute to those problems

it sounds like your not running on all 4 cylinders

nope, checked all spark plugs…they seem fine

Check for a fuel line leak, injector leak (as mentioned above), or a possible fuel pressure regulator problem.

Good luck.

will do…thanks in advance…I gotta fix this proto with the gas prices soaring and all…I’m only hitting just over 300 clicks on 1 tank…the thing is, when I bought the car, it ran fine but there was no power steering…once I hooked up the ps unit back and running, that’s when all these things happen especially very rough idle…the whole car is literally shaking and sputtering at low rpm ranges
