Rust Removal Advice

okk so ive been searching around and have seen many useful methods, sandblast, acids, cutting and all types of things but im just wondering what most likely is the best route to take for my 240 as ive been told that its mainly surface rust but im still a noob in the rust field. So what would everyone do in my position on the car in the pics below?

P.S. im planning on slamming a body kit on this and maybe running some drifting runs but mainly paint job, body kit, audio system, just a show car sorta thing. as well as a sr20 swap with turbo, intercooler, bov and all.

P.P.S although engine might look lyk crap and the rust takes away from it, the car pulls very strong still and very hard. Moves very well and no problems driving. especially hitting it hard handles very well and smoothly and pulls very hard.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

mmmm if there is that much rust, i would also check the rocker panels notorious and the best way to do it imo is to cut out the rust and replace it with new sheet of metal and dont drive it in winter

+1 on rocker panels.

so from what i can see it does just look like surface rust, except for that hoood… not saying its rusted through its just that it looks disgusting. u might wanna start working as soon as you can cuz thats alot of rust. if you don’t have much tools and equipment best thing to do is just to sand down all that rush till u see clean metal and then go krowne and grab some of that rust proofing shit spray the thing every where wheel wells strut towers heat shields all that stuff and then just repaint it. after that spray krowne every year before spring and mid autumn and you shouldn’t be seeing any more rust. also check your floor pan under carpets n stuff cuz chances are u are rusted there as well with that amount of rust on the car.

Ye rockers for sure. Also you might wanna check the body panels as it looks like it was painted. Buy a new hood, and maybe aftermarket since you want a show car. Um if thats a pic of ur subframe iunno looks pretty bad but other people would be able to direct you on that. And yeh CHECK UR FLOORS.

Thats a pictor of rad support… not subframe!

A bit of the front subframe is showing.

my heart bleeds for you… get out a dremel or some good sanders and go crazy(wire wheel aswell) if i were you id also tap the frame with a hammer to look for flex in the steel… that much rust with the 240 being almost famous for frames… cant be good…

catch up to her quick work all winter(dont drive it) or u might have a bass boat on your hands before long…

P.s. surface rust is always just the start.
cut what u can and sand what u cant.

RUST IS LITERALLY LIKE CANCER! if u dont stop it before you can catch it it will kill your car… and depnding on what happens it might take you down with it. Be safe, be practicle and above all. Be SMART

And an awnser to you “what would i do”… id part-out what i can make as much money as i can and scrap it… for a showcar u need a good basis… think about the long run… will you spend more money(and remember time is money!) getting it to build worthy or will you be better off finding a rust free(or better off) 240?
but thats just me…

Good Luck

take off anything that comes off (and is metal) have it blasted and powdercoated, then while that’s being done get a grinder and wire wheel and go at the chassis until it’s clean, use some rust inhibitor/convertor like pr15 or rustcheck (several thin coats) and when you’re ready have it all undercoated or painted with something durable

hey everyone, thanks again for the feedbak, it really helps out with where im going to be starting, doing lots of research im seeing lots of worse 240’s out there especially this one guys on nico, his car was eaten pretty badly and came out alright after he worked on it, so ive already stopped driving before the first snow fall came down, and at the moment its parked, sadly outside:(, but outside of my house, underneath a car cover and i sprayed rust check everywhere just to slow down the cancer during the winte because im not going to be able to tackle it till winter is over. planning on hitting one of my garages and prying her up and just sitting her there while we piece off everything and start going madd under it. Any advice anyones got would be great. thanks.

P.S. does anyone thinc i should hand it over to some body shop cuz i noe they’re gonna charge me like crazy but i wanna weld everything up tight, im not crazy about the body filler cuz that stuff just starts bubbling up later on.

get the metal work done and prime it, don’t worry about how ugly it is, you can resurface it with bondo anytime in the future

hey guys just a quick question, im planning on at the moment, its parked, hasnt moved all winter and i sprayed rust check all over the thing before winter, so now what im planning is i wanna get seriously rid of all the cancer for good and stop it in its tracks, so what im planning is probably around march break, one week straight to everyones selves, me and a team of about 4 other guys are basically gonna put it up, dump out the tranny, engine, and just about everything else that we can take off, clean up all the holes with serious sanding and cutting and then put metal on all the holes, then install new performance parts wherever i can reasonably (control arms, rods, bolts and all that) and use a battery and baking soda and dump in parts into a large sealed bucket where all of the rust will start coming off of and then sandblasting the entire body as well as the paint job because either way im going to be doing a paint job on the 240? but does that sound like a reasonable thing to do because im gonna have to pay rent for the bay, and then get a good sandblast kit, and then get all the sand and everything? does it seem reasonable?

and second thing is, does it seem worth it? or should i just try and sell this one off or part-out and pick up another ride with less cancer? because ive seen many cars with way more killer cancer then this.

lol and last thing, if i do end up taking it to a shop, what kind of prices am i looking at if anyone noes?

thanks guys. ez.
