School Me On A Laptop

I used to build computers back in high school but that was when the P4 was the best processor to buy so I am pretty rusty on my comp specs.

I am debating getting a laptop to replace my older desktops now that I am moving around so much and do not sit at a desk anymore. Also to allow me to do work anywhere.

I am starting to get back into gaming but mostly on Xbox 360 for now since I haven’t had a gaming PC but looking for a laptop that can run the newer games.

Also, can I return the Vista software and just put linux on it? Do I get any credit back for not wanting it?

I was thinking about this one which is just in my price range and has a ton of RAM. I really want a 17" screen for multitasking and web design. I cant work on a 14" screen. Also, I like to have it in my hands and see it so I am sticking to local retailers.

EDIT: Also, is a Core 2 Duo a 64bit processor? Is that the newest processor by Intel?

No, you can’t return vista lol.

Just watch techbargains.com and slickdeals.net for laptop deals.

All Intel CPU’s (Pentium and Core2Duo) '04 and on are 64bit capable.

Wait until Nehalem is in the notebook for the new Core2Duo (late 08, early 09) to come out. You won’t be sorry.

Doesnt it usually take awhile before new tech makes it to notebook form? I mean…arent notebooks still on those shitty 8700 gs’s gpu’s? Ive only seen 1 quad core cpu in a notebook out there too…i could be wrong, but if you want to buy now, it wont hurt. Its a terrible idea to wait and wait and wait. Because after all the delays are said and done, and you get your new nehalem cpu, then something new is right around the corner. Unless it is a few weeks away from a MAJOR release, than anytime, is a good time to buy. Dont be caught waiting. Ive tried that before. It gets old. Fast.

Nehalem is the next major release coming from intel and its not going to be for at least another half a year. Until then all they do is keep coming out with slightly improved cpus. A few more mhz, or smaller die. Nothing major in the way of an architecture change. Just buy now. 2.4ghz core 2 duo would suffice for a laptop. Get at least an 8600m gt in it too. Thatll run ya about 1g. Not too bad at all for a laptop thatll play games. Not to mention it wont be obsolete for awhile since Nehalem isnt going to be out anytime soon.

Ok I am going to Best Buy and Circuit City today and tomorrow to look for a laptop.

I want something that can play graphic intensive games and also be used for program. I know I want a 17" screen but what type of processor? AMD dual core 64 bit or Intel core 2 duo?

How much L2 Cache? the 2 x 512MB that AMD offers or is that bad?

Anyone find one under 1,000 that has this?

stay away from the stores. you will find a much better deal online.

stores dont bother me as much. i have had good experiences there and like the touchy feely aspect.

i am looking for the graphics card that you talked about that seems pretty common. what about l2 cache? the amd systems seem to have 512 x 2. is this something to stay away from.

as it stands now intel is spankin amd. I think even in the mobile world. Get at least an intel T7500 cpu. I had one in my last dell (they have a 4mb l2). Nice chip.
