I know they went from 2.0L to 2.2L… I might like the extra tq. This is going to be for auto-x/track days. Not for daily driving(maybe once in a while for fun).
You’ll be in a tough class in auto-x. I may get one in a year or 2.
it’s a never ending debate between AP1 and AP2.
there is a huge thread on honda-tech about it ( i believe )
and also s2ki
i dont think the s2000 owners on this board know enough about their cars to help you.
zong- i also want one in a year or two.
2.0- 9k redline
2.2- 12lbs more wtq throughout powerband, but a lower (8.2k?) redline
an ap1 will be cheaper but if you can swing it, people seem to prefer the ap2
edit: shureshot is right, look through s2ki and honda-tech in the s2000 forums. never ending info there
I’d go for an earlier one if your goal is tracking car… revs higher and costs less so fewer tears when you stuff it into a wall at the glen. plus I hear rumors of a s2000 spec racing class which will obviously be for earlier cars.
I’ve driven both back to back, brand new at a dealership when the 2.2 came out. I ended up with an evo because of the deal I got, but I’d have been just as happy with an S2000. On the street that extra torque was really nice but the car did feel safer in a not so fun way.
The 02 03 is the year to get. Glass rear window, some nice updated interior bits, updated syncros in the trans and still the 9k RPM redline. The extra torque wasn’t very noticeable for me. The extra redline definitely was. Adding in the premium for getting an 04+, it’s a no-brainer for me.
I like my ap1. its an 03 with low miles and its Honda certified.
When you’re ready to sell it, let me know :). I need another one someday.
you may need your racing license if you get a stew kay
AP1’s are ~20k aren’t they?

Might be able to get you an '05 STi in good condition in trade. I’d probably want a bit of cash on top of it though. Not much better for a DD except it has good winter capabilities and 4 doors. It’s probably too soon for me to do much dealing to get another S2000 though.
^^ EVO’S ARE BETTER

Never drove an AP2, but man, nothing beats 9K

Why is that obvious?
Spec Miata has provisions that have both 1.6l and 1.8l cars adjusted for the same class (a 26 hp/25tq difference between the allowed '90 to '05 cars). Spec Neon has provisions for both the SOHC and DOHC car in the same class. T3 has both variants of the S2000 in the same class with weight adjustments.
So why would they create a spec class and exclude the later cars?
because there is a decent difference between the cars and not enough newer cars for it to make sense?
who knows… I’m only going on 3rd hand information, you might be right… I’m also excited about the talk of a boxster spec series.
