Seized Brake Calipers

Looking for some friendly opinions on where to start with this issue. Just did front rotors and pads on my Jeep Cherokee. When I installed them, the wheels spun freely and there werent any issues. As soon as I start the truck up, put my foot on the brake to shift into drive, the front end just locks up and Im left doing heaters in my garage. Pulled it apart, put it back together, still same issue. When the truck is off, I can hit the brake peddle a few times and it stiffens up. When turned on, I can continually hit the brake pedal with plenty of play. The calipers just dont want to return to original position once I hit the brake. Where should we start before I just rebuild the calipers?

I had the same problem with my wrangler… you can lube the shit out of the pistons, but they’re probably pitted and full of junk. Ended up just replacing the calipers… Probably not the answer you were looking for, but it’s fixed the right way.

Matt, rebuilt calipers from Autozone are like $20 each for the front just put new ones on. I had to on my jeep when I did the brakes.

im not seeing a problem here.

dont forget to do the rubber lines

Most likely when you pushed the piston back in to fit the new pads/rotors a damaged part of the piston that wasn’t touching the caliper is now having to slide into it. Like others said, just replace them.

It’s also possible you pinched a line bad enough that the fluid isn’t flowing back and releasing the caliper. To find out, release the bleeder when the brakes are “stuck”. If doing that releases the brakes the problem isn’t the caliper.

Yea, thats what Im thinking. Sucked when it happened because everything was already closed. Advanced has a great deal right now though where you can input a code for 20% off your purchase, then just go in store and pick them up.

Im sure you can imagine the sound from the Jeep doing a burnout in my garage hahaha.

Thanks, Ill pull a wheel off and do this before I go throwing on the new calipers.
