Hello to everyone, for the most part I only post in the forsale section so here is a bit of info and pics of my car.
I own a 1992 240sx hatch, the car is from florida and has non of the cdn rust problems that we all have come to know.
Last summer the car was lowered with the Eibach Pro kit springs. I found the ride was great but the ride height was not what I wanted.
Here is the gap left after the lowering. The car is on kyb gr-2’s.
Don’t poke fun at the hub caps, I have the stock rims ready for glassbeading at the other end of the shop.
Those are rims off of an 89 240sx, they belong to a friend of mine he wanted to use my steelies for winter.
But anyway you can see the not so low lowering job.
So I decided a set of Eibach Sportline springs will work out better.
So off came the brand new kyb struts. Now I say brand new because when I took them off I saw a little bit of rust on some of the struts.
I figured it was because of the bits of metal in the brakes but why take a chance right?
So to the sandblasting cabnet I went.
Over the past few days they have been painted with a product called por-15. The product is made for guys restoring cars. Your supposed to paint suspension parts and perhaps your frame with it. It is really hard when it drys and will not chip or allow rust to start for a very long time.
Tomorrow I will have pics of the painted parts up for everyone to see. I will also have other pics of the on going work on the car.
Alright the struts are done being painted.
It actually took about 3 days to paint them between coats and the prep.
Now your all most likely thinking so what he painted some struts, good job. Whats the big deal?
Well during the winter it was decided that it would be a good idea to make the car quieter while driving down the road. So out with the hammer and a blade for some sort of hand plane.
After some time (2 weeks worth of nights) this is what I got.
Yes I realize the car is an automatic, I will get to that later in the update.
So the sound deadening, or as much as I want to remove is out.
What am I left with? a bunch of sticky tar like crap that is on my floor pan.
Out came the air sander…
So the same paint that I used on the struts will soon cover the floor pan so that no rust will ever start.
Nissan decided to spot weld the pans into the car so there was only seam filler along the seams. I took all of that out but will refill it after the paint.
I did tape up the barings before painting.
Por-15 is a great product and a little goes a huge way.
Update soon!
wait till you see the updated pics before I paint it heh its even better.
I should just put seats back in and call it a day… I will call it my jdm drift interior… 8)
Bob… you said it’s heavy, what kind of areas should a person be looking to apply it to then? Would it be suitable for an undercoating? What about coating the engine bay? Or should it only be used on trouble spots because it’s too heavy to be applied to the whole underbody, engine bay, etc…?
It does list all these applications, but I’m sure not all their customers have performance motoring in mind, so the weigh gained wouldn’t be an issue for them. That’s why I’m asking you instead
your local napa should have it, the one in brace bridge did. (where I got mine)
I would not suggest it as an undercoating… read the site tho.
its meant for your frame and things like that… I used that saten, you could use the gloss on the engine bay I suppose. It would hold out.
The product is not “heavy” like adding sound deadening or anything. Its just a thick paint.
I’m going with Andy on this one. GR2’s are the kind of shock that people give away. Even if they were AGX’s they wouldn’t be worth the effort to restore. Save yourself the trouble and go coilover shopping.
BTW: Solarian, the POR15 isn’t any heavier than any other thick paint/coating. The rubberized coating used on underbodies would be alot heavier than por15.
I’ll be honest I have no interest in coilovers for my car. I have no interest in lowering it anymore in my town then what the sportline springs are going to give me. the ride is nice and those struts are brand new. If I do go lower in my town I will rub every now and again. Perhaps when the rest of the car is done I will change that but for now the strut/lowering spring will do. I am going to take the entire suspension of the car apart next winter and sandblast and paint everything, then I am going to upgrade all the arms etc. The thought had occured that I was restoring a stock piece because some of those pieces are stock heh. Oh well.
As for the cost and effort the work is all done personally so really its just the material and a few boring nights that were killed.
Are they going to rust and look like crap? no
as for the sound deadening. are you crazy the car does need it, its a loud ride inside. I personally would prefer the ride to be quiet inside.
i am not looking to drift this car or anything. I just want a really nice ride or at least something I can be proud of.
If I want a drift car I will go out get a beater 240 and gut it.
One day during the winter it was decided between my father and I that we should fix the only rust problem in the car.
For anyone that has owned a 240sx this has most likely been a problem spot.
The spare wheel well. What usually happens is the hatch leaks somehow and water gets down inside the well without you knowing and then it rusts away.
We had figured cut a new piece of metal for the rust problem, then we figured that would be a long drawn out process being as neither of us had ever really bent metal in that way or for that matter had to weld it in.
Here is the issue. Some fiberglass was added last summer to make it less embarassing.
I really hate rust. With that said the cutting began.
The previous summer I went to the wrecking yard just outside of barrie (Tracy’s?) and found a wheel well that was in better shape then mine.
Out that came and the plan was that we would cut along the same line on this one and weld it in replacing the metal where the rust was.
While sitting down for dinner one night my father said “we should just order the stupid thing from Nissan”
I though that would be pretty slick if I could order that…
That night I went to sleep and woke up the next day with this in my back garage.
This is a pic of the section being prepped for the new piece to be spot welded into the car.
