Setting the idle

Do i need to disconnect my idle air controller when i’m setting the idle?

the distributor position is right, but the engine keeps searching for a idle rpm, it keeps surging, then almost dies, then surges again.

its an electronic distributor, and i disconnected the wire when i set the distributor, but then engine still won’t idle.

no u dont, clean or replace idle air controller with a GM one!

so i replace it.

then set the distributor with the tan wire (under dash) disconnected.

plug tan wire back in.

then reset the IAC by pulling the fuse???

then let it run for 15 minutes.

do IAC valves wear out, or do they just blow out??

i have a new one sitting here.

if i put a new one in, should i worry about it going bad?

they usually become carboned up and then the extra forcd the iac is trying to use to close and open it with all that shat on there will hurt it. Usually you can clean them and be ok. If not, then replace it.

Once you reset the computer, it should take a little while for it to learn the idle.

Final setting should go something like this:

get the timing close, enough for it to run ok. let it warm up till the fans come on. Set base idle. then, trip the computer and then set base timing. your idle should change. after you have base timing, un-trip the computer and set final idle. always make idle adjustments at operating temp. since the iac takes care of high idle when its cooler.

:bigok:

Just jumper the A and B pins on the ALDL connector with the key on to run the IAC all the way in. Give it 30 seconds. Then remove jumper and start the engine. The ECM should find its own idle.

i tried it, i warmed it, pulled the fuse, put it back in, jumpered the ALDL, let it run, and removed it, and it still had a choppy idle.

its alright, i have a brand new IAC in the box.
