Casinos: Player’s loss of law practice, houses is her problem, not theirs
She said her losses totaled nearly $1 million.
Now she’s chasing the longest of long shots: a $20 million racketeering lawsuit in federal court against six Atlantic City casinos and one in Las Vegas, claiming they had a duty to notice her compulsive gambling problem and cut her off.
“They knew I was going for days without eating or sleeping,” Taveras said. “I would pass out at the tables. They had a duty of care to me. Nobody in their right mind would gamble for four or five straight days without sleeping.” Hitting bottom
She lost her law practice, her apartment and her parents’ home, and she owes the IRS $58,000. She said she even considered swerving into oncoming traffic to kill herself.
In interviews with The Associated Press, Taveras admitted she dipped into her clients’ escrow accounts to finance her gambling habit. She was disbarred last June and faces criminal charges stemming from those actions, but is trying to work out restitution agreements in order to avoid a prison term.

Is this any different than taking someone’s keys away from them for drinking at your house?
yea i mean shes a dumb hoe and all, but thats pretty far on the casino’s part.
just as if you were serving someone alcohol, you must do it in moderation. i understand the casino business is there to make money, but the idea of making money is having people come back so you can make more money off of them(not seriously my belief, but in reality its what businesses strive for). you do not want to take all of it so they go broke and cant spend more money in your establishment
I guess it does raise a point but if you think about it but, the casino has no way of know if you are “over your limit” as with alcohol.
If you are drinking, bartender knows how much they have served you and can cut you off since everyone has a limit of .08. When people are gambling, no one knows how much someone has to spend. They might have 0 bills and are blowing huge trust funds that really have no impact. The casino cant pry into someones personal life to see how much money they have and can afford to gamble at their place.
If she was that bad, someone should have noticed. It shouldnt be the casinos responsibility.
QFT where was her family and friends why is it the casinos fault you might make $30k a year and blow it all gambling while someone else blows $30k on one hand and it doesnt phase them. She should be in jail for stealing her clients money to gamble with, im sure that has something to do with this suit make it seem like shes the victim so she doesnt end up in jail.
Dont casinos limit liability to fraudulent suits like this by paying for gambling addiction programs? How are they expected to know everyones spending limit, they understand people have problems with gambling and pay for recovery programs for people who admit they have problems.
Its no ones Obligation to take care of you other then YOU.
America breeds a society of fucking worthless pussies. They need warning labels on coffee because they are too fucking stupid to realize that fucking coffee is served hot. If McDonalds provided coffee that was NOT hot they would fucking complain about it anyway. Some stupid pig spills hot coffee on herself or kid and McDonalds gets sued… and loses.
Any minority group starts whining and crying and they get a free ride through life payed by people who know how to work hard for a living.
Parents discipline their kids so that they don’t grow up like the rest of these bums and they wind up in court because some stupid fuck is telling them they cant spank their kids.
No one wants to take responsibility for their actions. They all play the blame game.
Dumb fucking judges let this shit happen. If I was the judge I’d tell the person suing that they loss and are fucking stupid. I would not stop there though, I would also have that person pay for all of McD’s legal fees. Maybe then would these stupid lawsuits end.
The squeaky wheel gets the grease though no? I hate people who fight for “equality”. We are not all born equal and will never be, so why try to force it. Some work harder then others, should they not be rewarded?
This country needs more spanking and gravy.
This isn’t a joke, this is a 100% free capitalist society my friend. It is in no way controlled by big business and the pope.
You know very little about how law works. They’re going to just try to drag this out, her lawyer has NO desire to even see the inside of a courtroom. Basically be a thorn in the side of the Casino, or at least make them believe he will be, and hope for a settlement. Lawyer takes a hefty percentage, leaves the rest for the bitch to gamble away. Casino will probably pay rather than deal with a potential of being tied up in court proceedings for a couple years with this…
I imagine that her statements are a bit exaggerated… that being said I’m with nitroinsane and I wonder if the courts would take that into consideration.
Great, now you’ll have to click “I Agree” on the slots before you can start pulling the lever. Maybe sign a disclaimer before they even let you in to a Casino. All because this bitch wants someone else to pay for her fuckup.
Yeah it would have been nice if they had cut her off after she had been going days without eating or sleeping and had been passing out on the table. But then again I bet my left ball that she didn’t really do that.
Not eating or sleeping is not the Casino’s concern… how are they supposed to know thats happening? Even if they did, how are they supposed to know that shes not fasting for religious reasons or some other BS…
Now, if she continually literally passed out ON a table… I would say security / pit boss should check on her… even though I’m sure she said “I’m fine, I’m not leaving, I’m feeling lucky” :bloated:

If theres one thing i’ve learned from taking classes in law and casino gambling, it’s that this statement is very incorrect sir.
