SHO powered camaro

He seemed so frustrated/embarrassed at the mistake I felt bad even going to to bring it up but there was nothing I can do with this other block other than use it for mock up. I am already about a month behind where I wanted to be on the build so at least I have that I guess.

some other stuff from during the week

Alex dropped in the crank for the test fit while i started tapping out all the bolt holes. This is what turned out to be the scrap block and its all back apart now

My beer. Im less likely to knock my beer over if its in an easy spill / easy break glass because i tend to place said glass someplace safe, like on 108 lbs of steel…

heres some stuff laying on the floor. its probably not important

this is where i get to stuff an intercooler

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v473/hotrodkid/sho%20stuff/PICT0187.jpg

side view of the bay, 30" between the frame rails, and like 25 between the strut towers (people build forward / up ls1 turbo headers in that tight space? WTF?)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v473/hotrodkid/sho%20stuff/PICT0186.jpg

all of that stuff must die. Theres a harness on the frame rail behind the brake lines. Its going to have to be evicted. sway bar mounts are gonna have to go waaaay down too for turbo clearance.

Notched wiper cowl. the firewall is getting a 5" setback too, at the same time i will weld up the heater hole

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v473/hotrodkid/sho%20stuff/PICT0181.jpg

working out a plan for equal length headers, think im finally on the right track. these will be forward facing with the turbo in front of the crank. Gotta finish figuring that 3rd tube out.

had to fudge it a bit because google sketchup is a hack program, but it should be close enough for the required calculations

These car have a shit load of front end room. So much that NHRA/ADRL made the maximum front “overhang” spec off 4th gens so other cars with smaller front ends (fox bodies, 66-67 novas…) are fair for how the timing system works. You could fit 2 another LS1 in front of a stock placed one, and fit the fans.

This is a lot of work…

Update: Got the second engine back from napa yesterday. Machine work looks very nice. They also took that rusty pile and turned it into a very clan engine. The entire rotating assembly is installed. My back is really bad today so I am taking a day off from the car today. But I think there is only 6 hours or so until I have a mostly complete engine. The only thing I am missing are fuel injectors. I have not ordered them yet or send my fuel rail out for modification.

There has been yet another change to the project. With the use of a big hammer and a sawsall the entire engine is behind the front wheels. Obviously this is great news for weight distribution but it also mean that the stock manifolds will now fit. This is a MASSIVE time savings as well as a significant cost savings, and in a project like this anywhere I can save a grand is awesome news.

goals for tomorrow.

  1. complete engine assembly
  2. weld engine and trans mounts
  3. make list for all piping to order
  4. possibly mount turbo

as odd as this project is, i like it and that its different. look forward to seeing it completed.

let me know on that t56.

Just some updates for those actually interested in the project.

Currently I am still sorting out some of the wiring for the car. The headlights (low beam only), taillights work. Somewhere along the way the switch for the brake lights is missing from the pedal assembly so I need to get one. I still need to teach my self the turn signal circuit because I think something must be missing. The connecter for the HI beams has vanished. I don’t know how that happened either. When I gutted the car in 09 I probably threw some of the stuff out my mistake so I want to get that sorted out before I introduce the SHO engine harness into the car. The SHO harness will actually be the easiest part of the whole build. Essentially there are 2 grounds and 2 hot’s. apply fuel and turn the key.

The only major pieces missing from the build is the fuel system and some basic gauges. I am mounting oil temp and pressure, fuel level, RPM (maybe), EGT left and right and AFR. Everything else will be provided the factory ECU via a lap top mounted in the car. I still need to send my fuel rails out to be enlarged to fit the 48lb injectors that were originally in the turbo SHO. I don’t have the money for the ones I want for the season so these will have to do at least to get it running before the snow flies.

As far as fab goes the project is quickly approaching completion. A few days more and the remainder of the tubing will be sent out for final welding. Then we break the whole thing down and paint all the BS stuff to make it look nice, and put everything back together. It just seems like there is a endless list of little BS stuff to do.

Holy update batman!

X…

nice!

two things: paint thinner/acetone on a rag will take care of that permanent marker, and I bet those bushings on the turbo will melt quickly.

nice to see updates… i like the “dropped the bracket on my face twice in a row and forgot what i was thinking” i can so see nick saying that.

fantastic update!

good shit! this is guna be pretty sweet when its all done with

Get some springs in there instead. Such a sweet update!!! Post more man I want to see this thing RUN!

What turbo are you using?

Very interesting build, I hope it doesn’t break.

Finally. Updates!
After my build I really appreciate the absurd amount of work you are doing and the time it takes.
Get it done.

Also. Run an exhaust dump out the front fender.
I love seeing front fenders barf flames.

What trans you end up using and how silly is the adapter ?

Pretty wild stuff…good progress…

The turbo will have a chrome pot lined with heat wrap like the one on my turbo SHO if you ever saw that. It is still bolted to the exhaust side so you might be right.

Get some springs in there instead.

didn’t even think of that. could probably use ones right out of a exhaust gasket kit from a local parts store.

Very interesting build, I hope it doesn’t break.

you and me both

What turbo are you using?

It is a perecision PT 67 billet 67/65 I think It has been so long I don’t even remember. It is bigger than my last turbo

the amount of work going into this is indeed absurd you have no idea. I STRONGLY considered a side exit for the exhaust on a cutout but decided against it because this engine is louder than you can possibly imagine. If you want to hear a SHO engine I have the Y pipe off my SHO doing some upgrades this afternoon I can fire it up for you. I was going to race it at the track with 2 foot extensions on the manifolds to keep heat out of the engine bay but FUCK that. I would have to drive with ear plugs in for sure. I remember driving the turbo SHO with ear plugs and ear muffs… besides loud it is not a good sound. I didn’t want massive flames.

I stopped updating on NYspeed because there was so much hate on this forum. Thanks to a change in form policy I will be going through the thread and cleaning out the 9 pages of bull shit over the next couple days so if you want to read through it do it soon. Thanks forum management.

I was 100% on doing cutouts right up to the first time I started my car with open headers.
And again. I don’t envy the amount of work you’re doing.
