This is a SHO w/ open headers. it sounds like a dieing tractor, and the green car wasn’t any quiter then this despite the turbo.
The engines are indeed good for around 650 - 700 horse, Yamaha wasn’t fucking around when they designed them. The engine was originally supposed to go in a mid-engine Corvette fighter, which was dropped by Ford last-minute.
As the Taurus was the hot thing at the time, they decided to put the mill in there, kind of like dropping the big-valve 429s in the '69 / '70 Mustangs instead of the racing Torinos.
Awesome update.
Heavier, or lighter than stock?
89 mtx sho: 3,285 lb
94 atx sho: 3,472 lb
95 v6 camaro 3350 lbs.
1995 z28 3390 lb
That turbo will quiet down the exhaust note quite a bit. I think you are assuming that it will be loud like the video you posted. It won’t be anywhere near as loud.
it will not be a loud as open manifolds but my other SHO was still obnoxious. Hopefully the magnaflow camaro exhaust will make it a reasonable for street duty.
In for video.
Still interested to see what this ends up weighing in it.

that car weights 2940, and weight savings of the sho engine / th400 over the lt1 / t5s should make up for the cage and turbo kit. … so maybe if we are lucky we willl come in under 3000 in the end.
I was thinking it was going to be way heavier. How much does the front oil cooler assembly weigh by itself?
the bracket is only like 8lb or so, and each cooler w/ fan is listed as being 7lb
Awesome update guys. I’ll call you after 10 Alex; since I’ll be in a meeting most of the morning.
Acquired part of a grand am badge while searching the garage, stuck it on
the cr just to see who would notice. Alex caught it right away, and i think
hes the only one so far. It’s on with butyl tape and when it finally blows
away we get to call the project a success.
Finally got all the exhaust made up w/ hangers. Needs tig welding still.
oil filter location, bias valve for the brakes hiding in the back. Alex is slacking
on the wiring still … I think tomorrow we are going to slice and dice the ECU
wiring so it fits.
And here is a rather complicated cad file of how to build a car. Mainly used
as an instructional demonstration for the FWD crowd
spent the whole day reorganizing the garage today to make more room so we can work with the door shut and to get insulation up and make sure the heater is working properly. Everything is ready to rip open the factory SHO body harness and engine harness. I fucking HATE wiring right now!!! I should just throw a carb on this fucking thing pics to follow tomorrow.
I don’t really have much to update other than I have returned to work (my job not working on the car). This means I should be able to sort out my finances after a few months to purchase the rest of the fuel system. That is the last big purchase for this project. Everything else it just the million stupid things the need to be buttoned up.(brake lines, oil lines, wiring) The front of the car is way the fuck in the air. So either the previous owner had stupid stiff front suspension or there is a serious amount of weight missing over stock…
FUCK! Finish this!
GIVE ME MONEY
You certainly win “longest build” award!
