While i was on one of the locomotives at work we had to grab some empty cars from Irvin Works and i got to snap some pics and record a video, don’t mind the sound it was loud as hell…Here is what it looks like before it’s all pressed out. These come out of Edgar Thompson in Braddock still glowing hot, they end up being reheated at Irvin(notice the furnace in the video) Some of this is shipped to FisherBody(GM) and some is sent to other places for the manufacturing of refrigerators dishwashers and other things that require sheet metal.
Keep in mind these slabs are about 8 inches thick, after being rolled out they end up being close to a mile in length
nice! I remember taking a tour of both ET and Irvin when I worked for USS. We got to stand on the catwalk at the end of the line when those things came out of the oven. Guy told us not to stand directly over the slab because the heat coming off of it would melt your shoes! And this was on a catwalk 10 feet over top of the slab. BOP shop was cool too, where they inject oxygen into the mix for some reason that escapes me now.
Irvin was cool but the pickling lines stunk so bad I thought I would puke.
Did you get to check out Clairton Coke Works? The coke batteries look like hell on the inside, nothing but yellow hot ceramic bricks lining it. One of the engineers threw his glove on top of a Slab when it came out the oven after i asked him how hot, it didn’t burn or smoke, it just went poof
I was wondering why you “used” to work for USS, most people don’t leave once they are in and kinda figured it was an internship or something of the such. But Clairton smells like 20 fat women busted ass and the smell just hangs there
yep, it wasn’t the place I wanted to start my IT career, or rather, what they had me doing wasn’t what I envisioned myself doing. they still use lotus notes!
