We are living through an historic and tragic event in the history of an industry that built a large portion of the American middle class and made the hobby that we are all part of nyspeed for a part of our culture, yet this place can’t hold a conversation that requires more thought than “American cars are crap lulz!”
And people think I don’t post in Gen Auto anymore because I don’t have an interest in cars…
The point is that the Camry is engineered to be boring enough that people don’t break it. When housewives vote with their dollars and say boring is good, in a capitalist economy, the car producers make more boring cars. Eventually, everything is boring.
And yes, thats where I wish this discussion had gone too, but obviously 1)You are a moderator on nyspeed and should understand that this was the only direction this thread could have gone lol. And 2) That JayS is blaming boarjunky for derailing this talk when realistically, there was hardly one post that covered what you intended on discussing.
No doubt its sad and I will admit, I hopped on the Ford hate too, but did you honestly expect that with the maturity level of this site, for people to be able to handle this?
enthusiasts make up a pretty small populations of auto owners. We really don’t get much say in the matter. Trust me, I feel your pain. It SUCKS that toyota has ZERO sporty cars out. Nissan is rolling with just the 370z and the GTR(does that even count). Honda discontinued the s2000, leaving just the civic si as a “sports car”(which it HARDLY is)
so yes, it sucks that modern cars are SUPER boring. However, they are more economical and reliable than they have ever been, and that is something that this world needs. And, that goes for all brands, domestic, jap, and euro cars have ALL come a long way from what they were 20 years ago.
W/o Ford, Toyota would not be where it is today.
It was Americans that revolutionized Japanese production methods.
edit:
I can’t shake the feeling that my grandchildren will have the same feelings to wards domestics autos that I have to wards Harley Davidson.
I see HD as a huge failure. The imports came and started beating up on them in races so they stopped racing.
The shitty thing for the big 3 is that they can produce a similar quality car at nearly the same cost as the import companies. They were able to add thousands of dollars purely as profit for no other reason than people keep paying it. Whether or not it is true that the quality is much better, the perception in the market is just that.
Then, unlike American companies, you actually reinvest and refine products and processes until you are a full generation ahead. You also get to launch luxury car brands that use most of the same parts and the same business model.
^he is the reason I really haven’t posted in this thread, he just really doesn’t understand it, and wont be for it if its not a Nissan with a shitty warranty
Every car is a piece of shit and has issues… yes even imports. Ford is offering some AWESOME products as is GM, they just need to gets their ducks in order. The import humping/domestic bashing on this website, usually by retards that drive rot box hondas or hand me down mini vans, gets worse and worse as time goes on.
I dint wanna shit up this thread, but I was talking about the overall life of the car in relation to anyone who had owned it. For pretty much any buyer at any stage of any car, an import will always be cheaper to own. This is mainly because of domestic build quality.
Id take a 95 Accord over a 2000 Grand Am anyday, even if they were the same cost.
And for every scenario an import lover can bring up I can counter with just as many stories of where domestics have outlasted imports. Hell, I own two such examples; a Mustang that gets beat everytime I drive it and keeps wanting more, and a 230K SHO that I’ve owned for 4 years and really haven’t had to do much of anything to keep it on the road. I’d have to add up my receipts but I think I’m hovering around $1000 for over 4 years and 50K miles of service that I’ve put on it.
