So i was offered a trade on my car...

not that my car thats for trade is that special, but its a tough decision because its a dsm.

I just spent a lot of time, and money, on getting a 96 Talon TSI AWD running. It made the trip down to arkansas, so mechanically its fine (and trips to the track) but its rusted, a lot. as any dsm is in NY.

but i got it here to Hot Springs loaded with tools and parts to get my friends Spyder running, and while i was doing it i was offered to trade cars…

i want both, but choosing one is a really hard decision. they are both mechanically sound, but ones awd and coupe, and the others fwd but convertable. Actually, the fwd doesnt worry me as i would just do the awd swap again. The white spyder is 100% rust free though. ive worked on this car a lot in the past, and have been through it a lot and you wont even be able to find surface rust on the bolts its so clean.

If i wasnt planing on tracking the red car, i probably wouldnt care and just take the spyder from him, but with no cage, id be limited on where i could run it.

Anyways heres the 2 cars and what they have done and what they need:

96 TSI AWD:

  • 6 bolt
  • 880cc inj
  • AEM Wideband, oil pressure, boost gagues
  • Big 16g with CX racing FMIC + piping
  • ACT 2600 with street disc
  • Walbro 255 pump w/ rewire
  • 3/8" fuel line from tank to rail
  • Apexi GT 3" downpipe into HKS Super Drager exhaust
  • Greddy type S bov
  • evo 8 ecu
  • Tokico Illumina shocks/springs
    Needs:
  • new timing belt (not needed but i would want to do it to be safe)
  • new fenders (rusted so the bumper needs to be zip tied in place
  • new doors - door handles dont bolt up properly because rust has destroyed the holes
  • new hatch - rust holes in both sides
  • spare tire well is rusted through, and you can see the road. hole size of basketball. fiberglass would fix it though
  • brakes
  • driverside e brake is stuck, cable needs to be replaced
  • sunroof is fine, no issues but its starting to rust on the front underside

Spyder:

  • Rebuilt 7 bolt lower end
  • stiffer springs/stainless valves, evoIII cams in head
  • EVO III Intake Manifold
  • Ported 2g manifold
  • Small 16g
  • 660cc injectors
  • EVO 8 ecu
  • AEM wideband, prosport oil pressure + boost
  • Apexi N1 exhaust downpipe back
  • Greddy type s bov
  • Custom piping, spearco FMIC
  • 2gb Talon conversion (looks sexy)
  • New Timing Belt + balance shaft belt
  • new axles + tranny shifts perfect
  • 1.5" drop front and rear, not sure on brand but it handles better then my spyder ever wished it could.
  • Custom black + tan leather seats, eagle logo in rear seat (look in pics)

Needs:
Bumpers could use some paint
missing door sideskirt pieces. i have these in white already
headlights would look better replaced

The spyder looks like a better deal, but…i kind of want the talon so i can take it to the track. on a beat 14b with cracked hotside, i ran a 1.808 60’, and 8.88 at lancaster cruise night, with a passenger and 200 pounds of tools/gas.

Heres some pics of the 2:

Which would you choose…

rust free or an already running fast car that needs a lot of rust repair?

rust free >*

that spyder is so 90s car looking though lol

Get something cleaner… seriously.

Why not find an unmolested shell?

easy answer for me since i hate body work… id go with the sypder and convert it to awd, not only will it be really clean but not too many awd converted spyders out there

Rust free would be awesome, and id love being able to work on something without worrying about what ill find/how long before it rusts through. That was the whole reason i was even entertaining the trade to begin with.

And as much as id love to find an unmolested shell, i cant afford it. Thats again why im looking at this trade. I paid 700$ for the red shell above, and dropped in an engine/tranny/ecu and axles, and have been driving the crap out of it.
I also have all the parts to put the Spyder back to the 2gb Eclipse it should be, along with decent shape tan seats (or i might dye my grey ones black and put those in)

Bodywork is annoying for me, but ive never really cared how a car looked after i got rid of my Celica after it was broken into and all the work i put into having a ‘clean car’ was destroyed.
But at the same time, ive done the awd swap already on my red spyder, and while id love to do it again, the coupe handles so much better because its obv stiffer.

idk though, ill probably end up with the spyder.

What do you use the car for?

Cruising?
Track?
Car shows?

If you were heavy into racing the vert might be annoying if you start going quicker.

Find another coupe shell.

I can’t believe this is even a question…one car is rotting away more every day, the other isn’t…

No rust here in FL…

its only gonna be used to cruise and for the track. ill show it just because of what it is, but im not going to spend thousands into paint and whatnot to make it look good. most of its life is going to be at the track. And ive already felt the pain of going to quick in my one awd spyder i have now…with a small 16g on stock injectors and sidemount i went 13.8…so id already need a cage before i could run that again at NYIRP. thats why i made the trip to PA the couple times nyspeed went there.

and id love to find another coupe shell, and if i had a way to get one home, id take that 500$ fwd shell in a heartbeat. but i have a hard time getting cars from rochester to my house, cant imagine how much it would be to go from fl.

Its only an issue because of how much time i want to spend at the track this year. ive saved some money and am taking the summer off of work so i can spend as much time as possible at the track…and now it might not happen as planned.

Access a truck, rent a dolly, get the shell.
Yes, it will cost some money, but you’d need to decide how much it’s worth it to you.
You don’t even have to go that far South either to find decent cars.
I would pass the Spyder up only because of my distaste for them.

rust sucks.

About 2 months ago skyway auto parts had a clean rust free dsm shell… it was black and up on blocks, someone took the motor. Totally rust free underside but they did leave the windows down…

I’d get rid of the haggard Talon if someone wants to trade. You come away with a clean spyder which you might be able to sell and move into a clean coupe of that’s what you really want. Make the trade!
