East Asia allies doubt U.S. could win war with China

[size=3]The overwhelming assessment by Asian officials, diplomats and analysts is that the U.S. military simply cannot defeat China. It has been an assessment relayed to U.S. government officials over the past few months by countries such as Australia, Japan and South Korea. This comes as President Bush wraps up a visit to Asia, in which he sought to strengthen U.S. ties with key allies in the region.

Most Asian officials have expressed their views privately. Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara has gone public, warning that the United States would lose any war with China.

“In any case, if tension between the United States and China heightens, if each side pulls the trigger, though it may not be stretched to nuclear weapons, and the wider hostilities expand, I believe America cannot win as it has a civic society that must adhere to the value of respecting lives,” Mr. Ishihara said in an address to the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Mr. Ishihara said U.S. ground forces, with the exception of the Marines, are “extremely incompetent” and would be unable to stem a Chinese conventional attack. Indeed, he asserted that China would not hesitate to use nuclear weapons against Asian and American cities—even at the risk of a massive U.S. retaliation.

The governor said the U.S. military could not counter a wave of millions of Chinese soldiers prepared to die in any onslaught against U.S. forces. After 2,000 casualties, he said, the U.S. military would be forced to withdraw.

“Therefore, we need to consider other means to counter China,” he said. “The step we should be taking against China, I believe, is economic containment.”

Officials acknowledge that Mr. Ishihara’s views reflect the widespread skepticism of U.S. military capabilities in such countries as Australia, India, Japan, Singapore and South Korea. They said the U.S.-led war in Iraq has pointed to the American weakness in low-tech warfare.

“When we can’t even control parts of Anbar, they get the message loud and clear,” an official said, referring to the flashpoint province in western Iraq.

As a result, Asian allies of the United States are quietly preparing to bolster their militaries independent of Washington. So far, the Bush administration has been strongly opposed to an indigenous Japanese defense capability, fearing it would lead to the expulsion of the U.S. military presence from that country.

On Nov. 16, Mr. Bush met with Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi. The two leaders discussed the realignment of the U.S. military presence in Japan and Tokyo’s troop deployment in Iraq.

During his visit to Washington in early November, Mr. Ishihara met senior U.S. defense officials. They included talks with U.S. Defense Deputy Undersecretary for Asian and Pacific Affairs Richard Lawless to discuss the realignment of the U.S. military presence in Japan.

For his part, Mr. Ishihara does not see China as evolving into a stable democracy with free elections.

“I believe such predictions are totally wrong,” Mr. Ishihara said

this is basied on a statemnt made by some high born Japaneese guy who only know what peopel tell him and none of it first hand …
they doubt the US could win eh?? and who else would go solo 1 on 1 with china and win? that is why we ahve allies.
and short of nuclear war i’d have to do me a lot of killin in a war like that … and that get’s dirty…

oih wait i like his suggection “economic containment” sure let’s embargo them aginst the rest of the world untill there forced to start a war to get what they need to help their people survive.

more examples of Japaneese Chineese hate

I agree… Japan nationalism is generally awefully out of touch with the global situations. I think it’s some fodder for people that are looking to stoke fires on both sides of the potential divide though… which is what concerns me.

Japanese statements are taken very lightly when it comes to political statements.

Like the US, they are arrogant and stupid sometimes.

Japan is just trying to start some bullshit between us and china

they out number us something like 100/1, and they dont like us. they use us for investments and to sell their products.

if there was a ware we would need a lot of allies, but any country near them would side with them. its the logical thing for them to do… and with more of the old skool communists getting “voted” in to power in russia that doesnt help the situation any.

edit: i am sure japan is trying to cause shit to stop the influx of chinese products in to the US. i bet its killing their sales of sony electronics and bla bla bla… i dont doubt that these shit disturbers will be a major cause of another cold war.

Yea, I may be a tree huggin liberal but I have nothing but confidence in our military competence. One must, however, take into consideration the competency of the individuals leading the military.

Some of the comments in that article stink of world war, and I don’t like that one bit. It really upsets me that Japan wants to build up their military. Not because I don’t think the should have one, but because it will only increase tensions with China. We need to avoid a war with China at all costs, I dont want to die or have to live in a world full of this petty bullshit. I don’t care if this is the top powers in the world, its petty. Work with eachother, wer’e all grown ups here.

Yeha, it’d be nice. but good luck. people are so arrogant, and selfish that it’d be completely impossible…

As for the way things are going. Russia WILL return to communism. it’s only a matter of when it will happen completely. They tried democracy, and it’s shitting all over their faces. The public view in russia is that life was actually better during communism, as fucked up as that sounds. But Russia is a shithole right now. They would side with their Communist associates, China.

With China, no doubt they would whoop the US’ ass in war. Quantity > quality. But as far as it happening, It won’t happen. It would be biting the hand that feeds far too much. Because without the worlds wealthiest countries buying their goods, they wouldn’t be even slightly powerful. China can get away with whatever they want, because noone will step up to stop them. But they won’t go as far as starting war.

you’re kinda missing the point of war. it’s to take over/dominate. they wouldn’t lose income, they would own us. we would be a part of a global china.
hitler, and/or the mongols did go to war just to go to war, they did it to take over the world.

Communism works when there’s not a greedy mother fucker running things. (ie: dictator). Also, it won’t work where there’s already a strong capitalist mindset.

IMO: if USA actually did get into a war with China, there would be no survivors. Zero. Nobody wins.

agreed, it looks great on paper.

Zer0DazE = Socialist
it would work with a small country, but with a large government you have too many hands in the cookie jar.

I understand what you’re saying. but the situation in China is NOTHING like the situation of Hitler, or whatnot. it is more likened to the situation on USSR, where they knew they couldn’t take over the world, but played hardball anyways.

I really hope your right

I agree…but…I just don’t know anything for sure anymore

werd, no one knows what the nut running the country is thinking. he could be rational, or he could be a woman.

LMAO at the conclusion that women aren’t rational.

I’m not saying it’s wrong.

I don’t think China would win a war against us. If we went to war with them it would be completely different than Iraq. If China attacked it would be a real threat to our freedom, which would make people want to get up off the couch and answer the call of duty. Iraq was never a threat to our freedom, and we have to pussyfoot around killing civilians and all the related political ramifications. The only thing China has over us in people, not military technology.

Word.

Also, I dont think that there is a chance in Hell that Russia would side with China in any type of war anytime soon.

Listen in an all out war, worse case scenario we cold use our Nukes, it’s not like they are off the table.

i agree, patriotism would be reborn

this would be really really bad

look at the health problemns people in japan are still having after WWII. if anyone/thing lived after nukes were launched… ugh

China, more then any other country since 9-11-01, has remained fairly silent in the World of Politics, they’ve just been sitting back watching what America does.

If China is able to secure the Russian Alliance, then this would enable Russia and China to blend their military forces… create their own economic bloc… Mongolia would be assimilated, China would allow North Korea to take South Korea… China, would have the whole northern border open, allowing them to prevent a 2 front war…which would allow them to launch a counter offensive against an American strike from the middle east… and quite possibly, move through all of South East Asia, up to India (where all hell shall break loose)

If America is able to acquire Russia, then America would have China surrounded, forcing China to fight a circular defense, which, is nearly impossible… not much more to be said… America then becomes the Lone Super Power…

Russia, obviously wants Chechnya, and access to Middle Eastern Oil and possibly a good year round Warm Port… the question is… who’s gonna give it to them… The US or China?
