China’s indignant reaction to the announcement of U.S. plans to sell weapons to Taiwan appears to be in keeping with a new triumphalist attitude from Beijing that is worrying governments and analysts across the globe.
Calling in U.S. Ambassador Jon Huntsman on Saturday, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister He Yafei said the United States would be responsible for “serious repercussions” if it did not reverse the decision to sell Taiwan $6.4 billion worth of helicopters, Patriot Advanced Capability-3 missiles, minesweepers and communications gear.
This is quickly becoming a popular topic and probably for good reason. China seams to be taking on the role of world power sooner than predicted, which obviously is not good news for the USA. Realism and power transition theory say it would be difficult for China to surpass Japan and USA in economic and military force without a major conflict.
Personally I don’t think the are even close to us yet, but it’s interesting to see China act as if they are.
Only the U.S. would try to feed weapons to China’s biggest conflict country. To me this looks to be just a move by the U.S. to see how China will assert itself in these kind of matters
That’s because people still need to work for shit here. If we had a society where people didn’t have to work so hard and were entitled to more things like; free health care, welfare, and equal employment regardless of work ethic. Its Bush’s fault he lowered taxes on the Rich and the big corporations so that they could screw us.
De facto nuclear state
While there are currently no known plans in Japan to produce nuclear weapons, it has been argued Japan has the technology, raw materials, and the capital to produce nuclear weapons within one year if necessary, and some analysts consider it a de facto nuclear state for this reason.[20] For this reason Japan is often said to be a “screwdriver turn”[citation needed] away from possessing nuclear weapons.
Significant amounts of reactor-grade plutonium are created as a by-product of the nuclear energy industry, and Japan was reported in December 1995 to have 4.7 tons of plutonium, enough for around 700 nuclear warheads. Japan also possesses an indigenous uranium enrichment plant[21] which could hypothetically be used to make highly enriched uranium suitable for weapon use. Japan has also developed the M-V three-stage solid fuel rocket, similar in design to the U.S. LGM-118A Peacekeeper ICBM, which could serve as a delivery vehicle.
It has been pointed out that as long as Japan enjoys the benefits of a “nuclear-ready” status it will see no reason to actually produce nuclear arms, since by remaining below the threshold, albeit with the capability to cross it at short notice, Japan can expect the support of the US while posing as an equal to China and Russia.[22]
It is really all about power in the international system and asian region brought about by military and economic forces.
so lets say that no one were to use nuclear weapons… how long do you think it’d take china to invade and take over this country, seeing as how the majority of our troops are overseas?
I don’t think they would have much of a chance at all.
We have lots of strong allies, amazing technology, a large reserve of soldiers (not to mention everyone is armed) and the logistics of an invasion would be almost impossible.
I don’t think an invasion is something to be seriously worried about.
They wouldn’t even make it half way across the ocean… Their ships would be on the bottom and our pilots would have a field day on any airborne forces they tried to send. Not to mention their military hardware is a generation behind ours. Look how old Soviet shit fared in the Iraq war.
that article, to me, paints a picture of the world as a pressure cooker that has been rated to be safe up to 30 psi, currently bubbling away at 35 psi which could blow at any minute.
Yea that’s true. But didn’t a chinese submarine sneak undetected and then pop up next to an american aircraft carrier a little while back? It just makes me wonder how advanced china really is, as opposed to what the world thinks.
Really? where did you hear that? Typically a Carrier is protected by subs and escort surface craft. Unless the Chinese made something similar to “Red October” i dont see that happening
