So OOMA? What do we think?

DO you have the model number of the base?

If you configure it to IP addresses, you can change that to any provider.

The phone is not a VoIP device. Cablevision sends you a VoIP modem, and you plug your existing phone into it.

No, the base is a standard wireless phone base, it’s not VOIP…just 5.8ghz. I was just saying a single phone like the linksys won’t work for me since I have a multi-phone system with a handset in each room. That base plugs into the Motorola CableModem box from CableVision, that would have to be returned to Cablevision if i switched to VZ FIOS.

I guess after a little research I came up with something like this…Would something like a Packet8 service for $15/month, then a Voip router like the Linksys Pap2 work for me? I have no idea if those are good brands, but in concept? I want to steer clear of Vonage given the recent lawsuits.

Ok I asked cuz the site for that company has some VoIP based sets and also some standard sets.

I am assuming its a digital/analog rj11 jack that comes out of the device and plugs into something. If you can get into the device and change its sip settings, you can just buy service from another provider. If you are locked down, then buy either a SIP device or a SIP gateway if you wanna keep the same phones.

yes, exactly!
only it’s on monthly lease. they own it, so i’d need a new solution if i dropped them.

Ok.

Then all you need is a SIP gateway that you plug one end into your Verizon/Cablevision/Comcast/etc router and then you can plug any standard phone into. In that adapter you then configure it to connect to the sip server that you signup for. You can buy the adapter box now and test it out with VoIPBuster.com. They are free to dial any US number outgoing so you can test the quality and service before going all out.

Cheapest way to do it would be this:

  1. Sign up for voipbuster.com (i know i keep saying this service but one of the easy ones to setup and i use it so i know the settings and its free)

  2. Buy a SIP gateway (http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1146582254856&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper) and plug any analog phone into the phone adapter and the network end into your modem. Configure the settings based on your SIP provider and you are good to go.

Thanks!
The FAQ on VOIPbuster says you have to dial 00+acn even for local?

I don’t mind paying a few bucks for reliable service. Any tips on pay service providers like Inphonex, Packet8 or Lingo?

Havent done that much searching for a pay provider becuase I do not use it that much but I do dial 1716XXXYYYY when I call anyone with voip buster.

right on. thanks for the help so far.
great info on voip and your avatar is great to look at.

No problem.

If you wanna be future safe, don’t buy a branded product that ties you into a service. Buy a SIP based adapter or phone and use that.

SIP is the protocol of the future (at least in the consumer world) for home VoIP so you will be covered for years to come. Know too that once you get a SIP provider service, you can use any SIP client to connect to it from anywhere. If you are traveling and bring your laptop, you canget a free SIP client on there to use your home phone, etc.

Hit me up if you need something. I might be doing a hosted PBX service to allow people voip service access as part of my hosting company soon.

boxxa,
what is the extra bell/whistle on this linksys for $10 more? i don’t understand.

http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1146582257191&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper

The $10 more one looks like it functions a little more enterprise wise. Can have a copper phone line in it so if your internet is dead, you can have it pick up a copper line to dial out.

Also seems to allow some call processing in it to handle calling and managent a bit better in business environments.

Only reason to really get that one is if you have a standard house line for something such as an alarm system and can use that as a back up. I dont see why any home user would need it tho.

boxxa is dreamy

voice over internet protocol is hot

a/s/l? :nerd:

boxxa I looked at voipbuster…Its only free for 120days??

No US to US is free. I use it a few times a month when I sit on a conference call for 3 hours and don’t wanna waste my cell phone minutes.

UPDATE: Actually I take that back. I clicked the hidden little link and see what you are saying. I had no idea. I must still be in my “free days”. Looking through my emails, I signed up October 5th so that is why. It is a good way to test a SIP service tho with your internet for free to make sure you can handle it on your network at home but I guess you are stuck paying after.

Well I can do free sip thru work…I always like to have an extra way to make harassing phone calls…

We have a SIP server too but its not fully setup so to dial from our PBX through the sip server, I need to put XXXYYYZZZZ@172.X.X.X as the phone number which I have yet to find a iPhone client to be able to do yet.

I still want that Linksys phone. Lol

I fired it up last night its nice

We got one when it first came out used it at HSBC arena for a bit then I forgot about it.
