So OOMA? What do we think?

$220 for a VOIP device?

neat

like the concept…or have you used it?

I haven’t used this but I have designed and built hosted VoIP systems…

The only down side for residential would be if you had a shitty internet connection…I was going to say power outage/bad weather being an issue but everyone has at least one cell phone now.

I would rather go with this over the magic jack since this is stand alone…

I am interested to know how ooma plans to stay in business and turn a profit

magic jack seems like the same thing but cheaper. Besides the annual fee.

Compared to other similar services you pay about 2 years upfront…but this includes the ATA adapter(which can be had for $20-$30)

Thats an expensive SIP device.

Its easier to just build a damn asterisk PC and use that as your SIP proxy.

i thought it was decent since there was no service fee. but do i have to worry about them being in business.

You’re getting locked into their proprietary device…for about a year…

Who knows how technology will change in a year?

ok i hear what you’re saying, but is there any voip that is futureproof?

If you want a device, make sure its just a SIP device. That is the end user protocol that will be using. Dont lock your self into a service’s device.

Honestly, if you want a home voip phone, get something like the Linksys WIP330. Its $220 bucks but SIP based so you can use with ANY SIP provider (ie. voipbuster.com) so you can get free calling. Also its all on the phone so you can bring it anywhere you get wifi.

I use the SIP client on my iPhone when I am in WiFi to make voice calls over the data. It works great but again, I dont see it as a permanent solution. A land line is always there and pretty much always on and they don’t have failsafe technology yet for home security systems, etc that require a phone line.

This one? lol

but the thing is i’m not looking for a new phone.
I have a Uniden 5.8 base setup with 5 handsets. i currently plug the base into a motorola router from cablevision for their voip. now i’m thinking about switching to FIOS for TV an Internet. But stupid Verizon only still offer POTS service, maybe VOIP in Q109…and even still they don’t want to cannibalize their copper service, so there will be minimal discount. And whatever it is, it will be more than the $20/mo i pay to Cablevision currently.

i guess I’d like something where I can take the device and plug into my phone system at home. and not have to have a computer on all day. any good ideas for that?

ugh. im so jealous. i love that becuase its SIP based and can be used with anything. this is the one we have but its only h.323.

I forgot I had this in my drawer

Want to buy it???

How much? Not really gonna spend $200 for something I might use once a week. Lol
