So the Libertarian party...

glitch: what are you talking about… why don’t you just answer the question?

ILC: very true, and more people who are primed and ready for them.

I don’t answer retarded questions.

you’re either avoiding the point or my question, or just don’t understand it.

As strong as they can make it. It’s not like you can overdose. There is something to be said for personal responsibility.

you may not be able to overdose but time could go REALLLY REALLY SLOW!!

Making laws mroe strict on drugs is what creates new and more dangerous criminals. There are always going to be people using drugs whther they are illegal or not. The responsibility lies with the parents, not the federal government to prohibit drugs. Look at the steroid mess that the federal government has gotten us into. Anyone caught with steroids will be treated as a federal drug criminal and placed in the same class of people caught with meth, heroin, cocaine etc. We are placing non violent offenders who were minding their own bussines in jail with violent criminals. They created the anabolic steroid control act to stop cheating in sports, not only has cheating become out of control in sports, baseball especially, but i dont see many professional athletes going to jal for steroids do you? They created a law to adress cheating in sports, and this affects all of the people, who arent cheating in sports! Way to get it right federal government.

What you dont understand theblue, is that no matter how hard they try, the government will never be able to fix the drug problem in this country, and making the laws more strict, only makes the areas with the drugs, more violent. The government isnt supposed to be spending billions a year fighting the “drug war”, the parents are supposed to be guiding their children and teaching them right and wrong.

while it might be my hope to “fix the drug problem”, that’s not my goal for wanting pot to remain illegal. Most simply put, we can’t control the problems that stem from alcohol abuse, so I don’t want to double down. I accept that pot and other drugs will be around, but if companies can market them with unlimited resources with a goal of profit I see a social disaster looming.

well the solution in that is eltting the states decide if they want the drugs legal in their state or not. And NO, not every state would legalize marijuana, because there are obviously many concerned parents who dont want their children growing up around it, so you know what would happen, some states, knowing they would bring in higher population which means more tax money, would make it illegal, and they would watch all of the people who share their values start moving to their state. the people are happy because its illegal, and the states are happy because they get tax revenue from the families who live in their state! Thats how a constitutional republic works! The founders designed it that way so that each and every state would be a different adventure if you will. And There would most likely be a state that fits most if not all of the different and uniqu values of each and every person, in other words there would a be a state for everybody, and if you didnt like the laws in your state, you could pick up and move to a state whos laws more reflect your values. That isnt the case now, now everyone has to follow the endless number of federal laws that all states must obide by.

that’s not a solution to anything. it’s like having a bad deck of cards and saying you’ll shuffle again.

I never sqid it was an ultimate solution, i said that people are supposed to have freedom of choice, and if they want to completely destroy their lives, then who is federal government to try and stop them. Which once again brings us back to the fact that this war on drugs hasnt been much of a solution either.

people driving drunk and high kill people every day… but I guess that’s they freedom of choice?

So focus on the driving erratically, not the consumption. Why treat it differently from alcohol? I never agree with B18 but I do here. People do or do not do drugs for their own reasons. Legality is very low on that list. Particularly for marijuana since it’s such a slap on the wrist for the end user, yet outlawing it allows billions of dollars to go toward cartels and criminals, instead of the government who could control the supply chain and tax it.

Teen drinking went UP when they banned it. Prohibition made people drink MORE. If they outright ban tobacco, I expect the same. Laws don’t deter anyone.

those are all myths.

usage always goes up when penalties go down and access becomes cheaper and easier. (as long as the commodity has perceived value)

Why would we stop now when the war on drugs has been going so well?!

My gut instinct is that demand would increase in the short-term, as the penalties for being caught go away and marijuana should be easier to attain (this isn’t much of an issue in most places, but occasionally is. ) Both of these factors suggest that in the short-term, demand should rise.

It’s much harder to say what will happen in the long-run. It is appealing to some people precisely because it is illegal… people have been tempted by the “forbidden fruit”. It’s possible that once marijuana has been legal for awhile, it will no longer be seen as cool and demand will drop off. Usage does not ALWAYS go up long-term when penalties go down.

Even if usage DID go up, which is debatable, the windfall in revenue could be used for better enforcement of existing laws. Do you know how much more available police presence there would be if they didn’t have to focus on drugs and the guns and knives that come with them? Buffalo would look like Amherst. Amherst would be nailing every driver with a .081.

Not to mention it would open the hemp farming market back up in the US.

Right, and making drinking and driving laws more strict has really cut down on that ahsnt it? The fact is that we have to accept that violent crimes and the taking of drugs, and bad things happening while people are on drugs, is always going to happen, no matter what we do.

Very well put and yes, the fact that drugs are illegal makes them much more apealing to young kids. Kids natrually want to break rules, therfore, the more rules we make, the more they get to break. And i am a firm believer that once our police would be allowed to focus on actual criminals, crime rates would drop, while non violent offenders could be let out of prison, freeing up room for the violent criminals. Drug addiction is not a legal problem, its a mental health and addiction problem, which needs to be cured with rehab, not prison sentences.

That is like saying because people kill other when driving while texting no one should be allowed to have cell phones.
