Bike has been down for about a month, and FINALLY got it back together. Honestly it didn’t take me too long considering, but I have been dying to ride.
so first lets start with the before pictures…
bike when I first got it last year
So heres the story…
One of my fork seals went bad, and I had to take the forks to freewheeling to get done, and since the bike was down anyhow, I just kept adding things to the list to get done.
sooo I ordered a 520 conversion. -1/+2 vortex sprockets and an RK chain.
Then, since I have access to powdercoating at work, I figured I’d take off a couple small parts. Like the rearsets, suspension linkage, and the SWINGARM lol.
Didn’t get any pics of the parts off the bike pre-p/c but here they are all matte black. The forks however, I painted, since they probably would not hold their own in the oven…
Now I also have free access to welders, and scrap metal. so I decided to make my own muffler, instead of spending $450 on a slip on.
First was to cut apart the muffler.
Uncut
cut in thirds
The middle section was the only one I needed to work with. I had to gut it. (thank god for acetylene torches!)
Took out the baffles, but didn’t grab a pic of those unfortunately.
Then, I grabbed a piece of stainless steel, and punched out a perforated pattern.
Then I rolled it, BY HAND. to make a tube, and welded the seam.
Then took another piece of stainless, and cut it to the shape of the cross section of the muffler, and welded the tube to it.
then welded the new baffle, inside the muffler. (this pic only shows it sitting inside, I welded it after this)
Packed the canister with 4 stroke f/g muffler packing. And trimmed down the tube.
welded the sections back together…
and tada. custom exhaust. Put it through for a high temp black powdercoat, rated for 2000*.
And now, the finished pics… (detailing courtesy of Paul (psphinx) paint looks fucking awesome now. NO MORE SWIRLS lol.)
The pipe is fairly quiet, which is exactly what I wanted. Louder than stock, but quieter than aftermarket. It’s getting slightly louder as it breaks in, but I’m definitely happy with it.
Gotta say, the bike feels pretty damn good with the new gearing. Haven’t screwed around too much, but it’s a fairly substantial difference.
Sometime over the winter, I’ll take off the engine and clutch covers to get those black as well. but until then, I’m MUCH MORE than pleased with the bike as it sits.
