i just swapped from sohc auto to dohc 5 speed and i thought i’d clear up some of the info that i found on the internet, for the most part it’s true.
i found that everyone said you needed DOHC power steering lines, you don’t. you can bend the sohc lines, but it doesn’t look as good. sohc reservoir works too, it just doesn’t mount properly as the bracket is different.
internet said the sohc throttle cable is too short, it isn’t, you just have to put it where the cruise control throttle cable would normally be.
i read that the temp sensors were different and if you used the dohc sensor with the sohc cluster it would say the engine is running hot, mine works perfect with a dohc sensor.
engine wiring was exactly what i read, match the colours.
as for tranny wiring, what i found on the internet worked great, but there weren’t any good pictures to show what to do, here are a couple:
basically there are two connetions that you have to make, the larger wires with the wires under the fuse box (black and white) must be connected together, and the center plug of the three on the side of the fuse box must have a connection made (black to blue if you cut the connector off the auto tranny harness like i did).
the green wire that is sticking out of the plug in the first picture is for the reverse lights which i haven’t hooked up yet because i had to get home that night.
the swap would look a lot better if you used the dohc parts, but if you are on a budget like i am then the way i did it works just as well, its just not as pretty.
