and of course this will be worse than EVERY bomb laden child, woman, retarded person that they used to kill randoms

> > [B]BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- A soldier used the Quran -- Islam's holy book -- for target practice, forcing the chief U.S. commander in Baghdad to issue a formal apology on Saturday. > > ![http://i.l.cnn.net/cnn/2008/WORLD/meast/05/17/iraq.quran/art.iraq.quran.cnn.jpg](http://i.l.cnn.net/cnn/2008/WORLD/meast/05/17/iraq.quran/art.iraq.quran.cnn.jpg) Maj. Gen. Jeffery Hammond apologizes after a soldier admitted using the Quran for target practice. > > > ![http://i.l.cnn.net/cnn/.element/img/2.0/mosaic/base_skins/baseplate/corner_wire_BL.gif](http://i.l.cnn.net/cnn/.element/img/2.0/mosaic/base_skins/baseplate/corner_wire_BL.gif) > > > > Maj. Gen. Jeffery Hammond, commander of U.S. forces in Baghdad, apologized to leaders in Radhwaniya, in the western outskirts of Baghdad, for the staff sergeant who was a sniper section leader assigned to the headquarters of the 64th Armored Regiment. He also read a letter of apology by the shooter. > It was the first time the incident -- which tested the relationship between U.S.-backed Sunni militiamen and the military -- was made public since it was discovered May 11. > "I come before you here seeking your forgiveness," Hammond said to tribal leaders and others at the apology ceremony. "In the most humble manner I look in your eyes today and I say please forgive me and my soldiers." > Another military official kissed a Quran and presented is as "a humble gift" to the tribal leaders. > The soldier, whose name was not released, shot at a Quran on May 9, villagers said. The Quran used in the incident was discovered two days later, according to the military. > Hammond also read from the shooter's letter: "I sincerely hope that my actions have not diminished the partnership that our two nations have developed together. ... My actions were shortsighted, very reckless and irresponsible, but in my heart [the actions] were not malicious." > > > > > > A tribal leader said "the criminal act by U.S. forces" took place at a shooting range at the Radhwaniya police station. After the shooters left, an Iraqi policeman found a target marked in the middle of the bullet-riddled Quran. > Copies of the pictures of the Quran obtained by CNN show multiple bullet holes and an expletive scrawled on one of its pages. > A military investigation found the shooter guilty and relieved him of duty; he will be redeployed to the United States for reassignment away from the 1st Brigade of the 4th Infantry Division, a U.S. official said. > "The actions of one soldier were nothing more than criminal behavior," Hammond said. "I've come to this land to protect you, to support you -- not to harm you -- and the behavior of this soldier was nothing short of wrong and unacceptable." > Officials said the soldier claimed he wasn't aware the book was the Quran. U.S. officials rejected the claim. > Tribal leaders, dignitaries and local security officials attended the ceremony, while residents carried banners and chanted slogans, including "Yes, yes to the Quran" and "America out, out." > Sheikh Hamadi al-Qirtani, in a speech on behalf of all tribal sheiks of Radhwaniya, called the incident "aggression against the entire Islamic world." > The Association of Muslim Scholars in Iraq also condemned the shooter's actions and the U.S. military's belated acknowledgment of the incident. > "As the Association of Muslim Scholars condemns this heinous crime against God's holy book, the Constitution of this nation, a source of pride and dignity," the groups statement said, "they condemned the silence by all those who are part of the occupation's agenda and holds the occupation and the current government fully responsible for this violation and reminds everyone that God preserves his book and he [God] is a great avenger."

So all you have to do is shoot a quran and they send you home?
Shit you’d think more people would be lining up to do that.

TRUST ME, you dont want to be sent home for something stupid like that… youd be better off dancing round outside the wire wearing a pink dress singing britney spears than getting getting sent home for something like that

I’d do either if it’s all I had to do to not get killed. Think about it.

i think the people that signed up had a pretty good idea what they were getting into when they raised their hand… think bout it

exactly. If you joined the military after 9-11 and arent willing to go over seas thats your fault for joining a war time military. Anyone who enlists these days should expect to be deployed at some point or another.

I hate seeing soldiers talk about not wanting to get deployed but have no problem taking all the benefits of the GI bill and the sign on/extension bonuses. The only reason you get that money is because you raised your hand and said that if need be you’d go where the military wants you.

well thats a bad judgment call if I ever saw one, on the soldiers choice that is.

What a pathetic joke.
Apologizing to those psychotic fucking retards

Who the FUCK is going to apologize for roadside bombs and everything else.

Fuck those people

Disgusting

our ROE are a fucking joke… we cant even engage now unless we get clearance first. and even when that happens, we face the risk of being put on trial for murder when we get home… fucking re dic u lous

whats funny is the geneva conventions and ROE are in place to protect the “enemy” cause they dont follow them and are allowed to do anything they want to, but since we follow them, they get good treatment when we take them in…

yeah, real easy to find a job with a dishonorable discharge on your record

yep… thats a federal conviction… cant even get a job at mcdonalds with a DD

no, no - that soldier took it to a level that we didn’t need to go to. overall this move made an investment in how ‘dirty’ the war can get. don’t run too far with this, man

Too far.

It’s not the religion anyways. It’s nutjobs who try to use it as an excuse, and a reason.

It was a bad move on the soldiers part, roadside bombs aside, 2 wrongs dont make a right

what utter disrepect, you think he would at least read it before he gave it a bad review…

it’s a double standard.

muslims in both iraq and afghanistan routinly partake in smoking hash, child porn, never pray and the afghani tradition is ass fuck thursday.

they’re trying to get money and that’s the only thing on their minds. they don’t give a fuck about the offense the quaran as much as an athiest would care about someone shooting the bible.

on a personal note the quaran is the book of the same God as the bible and isn’t something i would have done

nice mike lol

If he had some towlies to shoot at instead this would have never happened.

:gotme:

Its a joke though. He wasn’t DD’d though right? He is just being deployed elsewhere?

Lame. The only reason its a big deal is becuase they are psychotic and if you don’t appologize right away then they will blow eachother back to the stone age. That whole area is a joke.

If someone came into America, and took a bible and started shooting it up, the same thing would happen.
