I’d tell them to come pick it up and take it to another shop. NO way in hell would I touch the car, friend or not, as they’d probably take me to court for messing up the engine.
Call him back and record the conversation saying something that will protect you in court, stating that the engine is making noise due to failure PRIOR to you touching it.

+2 dont be a fool, when we (DMV) prosucute unregistered shops it usuaslly due to consumer complaints. without a complaint its a 50/50 thing with is like 110%
