It sounds like you need to bring your car into a VW shop and have someone look at it. Going by this post it sounds to me your really not too sure what’s wrong and your just going and asking any Joe Blow technician that works on cars. Volkswagen’s are a PITA to work on, i’ve owned 5 of them now and i’ve worked on every single one of them myself and nothing is easy about them.
My advice to you is call a couple Volkswagen shops.
You can also try calling Autobahn in Albany. The owner’s name is Greg, I used to go to this guy when I couldn’t figure out what was wrong with my car. He’s worked on European cars forever and is pretty reputable. I don’t have his number handy, but I know he is listed in the Yellow Pages. Good luck
But the idea you had of 2nd gear being shot is beyond me. I don’t know if it’s just me, but some stuff is sorta common sense to me, and a grinding going into gear is usually a syncro, but not a whole fucking gear.
the reason why second gear goes prematurely, is because it takes the most abuse when shifting. think about how hard/ often your shifts are into 2nd. the second gear itself is supposed to be reinforced, and strong then the others, for this very reason. i agree with you, and think its the syncro as well, but you can never really tell whats up until you tear it down.
yeah im not toally sure if want to sell it and get a new one especially now that i actually have some decent plans for the car ( all i need now is $$$ haha) i may keep it and build it then buy another older rwd car for playin around or maybe even make it a track car
I’ve never rebuilt a FWD tranny but all manual trannies are basically the same functionally. It is either the synchro or the possible damage to the slider as well, OR both. When it is apart you can repair the slider if it is not too bad, I did it on my T-5 5spd in one of my Mustangs and it worked perfect.
