Someone help me fix 2nd gear

ok so i think i have a chipped tooth in 2nd gear when im really on it it grinds but if im super gentle with it (like excessively) or if im at low rpm’s its fine it doesnt grind at all, could it be the syncro? and anyone want to help me with this, i’ll buy the parts obviously but im a poor person so i cant afford to pay a shop and i dont know how to do this. The car is a 2001 Jetta MKIV 1.8t and its a 5spd, oh and its not the clutch i dont think because its a pretty much new clutch

It might also be your linkadge

Synchro FTL. If it was a ‘chipped tooth’, you’ll experience issues not when shifting, but just driving along in second gear.

Yea, what Cossey said. It definitely sounds like a synchro went.

Synchro’s should be pretty cheap/easy to replace, go around get some price quotes and see what shops say.

R u ready to pull the tranny? Is it a 5 speed? If so there are some special tools for that job same goes if it’s a 6 like mine. Not for the feint of heart.

ok wow i forgot i made this but after some poking around i found it was somthing much simpler but seemingly hard to fix the hose going from the c.a.i to the crank case falls off the crank case ( its just a shitty plastic hose that snaps on its weak) now i snap it on but it will just fall off after a little driving ( a few miles or so) now this makes my 2nd gear grind and hurts my tranny, how the hell can i get this hose to just click on and stay on the god damn crank case, its so simple and i cant fix it >:(

i know its not his job but since im getting a diverter valve installed 2moro (stoked) over at jvg maybe he will have some remedy seeing how he has the same car

Let me get this straight…
You’re saying that a hose that goes from the cold air intake to the crankcase is causing your 2nd gear to grind?

This does not make sense. And what hose is this that falls off?

i know it doesnt make any god damn sense i was told this by a shop and all i could think was " how the fuck could my intake and some hosing be fucking up my transmission that doesnt make sense" but it is and its just a plastic hosing that clicks into the crank, if im not making sense im sorry its kind of hard to explain if you saw it you would understand, its just a nazi engine i guess

kinda helps if you know what your talking about… ::slight_smile:

ok dick, if you look at the c.a.i there is a rubber hose coming off the side of it, this hose runs into an adapter that runs into a large-ish maybe .5in diameter plastic hose that then runs into the crank case, this hose where it connects to the crank case will not stay on it is just a crappy snap on thing, all i want is for someone to tell me how i can get it to stay on or where i can get a better maybe steel braid hose that will snap on better

No, I prolly wouldn’t understand it. It does not make sense at all. Crankcase to intake? Only thing I can think of is the PCV valve, and that’s on the valve cover usually. And AFAIK, it’s virtually impossibly for the PCV system to make your transmission grind.

yeah i can’t see that the little hose from the intake is effecting the tranny…and i asked my dad( :o ) and he said that the hose has nothing to do with your 2nd gear grinding

internet.

srs bzns.

haha srsly

im just going by what a shop guy told me, and joe do you think your dad could look at it say tomoro or tuesday since im not working because i cant afford to pay for a shop to do any more work to my car

well fuck i guess im back to square one but now i have 2 problems the hose to my crank case wont stay on, and my 2nd gear is fucked

If your looking for SS lines I think the name of the place I’m thinking of is Shako, but I can’t remember where the hell they are.

shako is on old loudon rd in latham, just half mile down from my house

stop saying your second gear is shot when it’s obviously just your syncro
