Something I agree with Obama on.

I agree with most of this. City dwellers care nothing for education and pass that along to their kids. Its a complete cycle of shit.

NY has some of the hardest qualifications in becoming a teacher. We spend millions on updated classroom tech, constant research in methodology and professional development. I personally feel that its not our school systems that are failing as much as it is this countries parents and the kids themselves.

There comes a point when the students need to take responsibility for why THEY are failing.

As far as summers off are concerned, I don’t know a single teacher under 50 that has their summers “off”. I have been teaching for five years more or less and have always either NEEDED to teach summer school or find a summer job

It is a little crazy what NY requires to be a teacher given the low salary involved. I have a feeling (don’t mean to offend you personally) that is why many teachers are not exactly up to par themselves. The “smarter” people go for the higher paying jobs. Of course this is not true in all cases but I am sure we can remember plenty of lack-luster teachers from school.

The problem is we already have the normal class. And the non-inclusion class(basically severely handicapped kids). And usually AP classes. How many stratifications can we make?

This really reminds me of arguements about prisons where people say why should we care about their conditions. Because most of them are going to end up back in society. Gee, kind of like schooling, these kids are going to end up in society. If we don’t teach to them, they will end up raping us white people. Literally. I don’t want to get raped. Let’s get them to a point where they can at least swing a hammer and think they are important.

Now you sound like the liberal, it’s a FREE education. You want a good education, pay for it. That is valuing education. You aren’t going to get a harvard education for free. You probably aren’t going to get your kid into Harvard if he went to public school. I know, I know, society uses education to meet it’s needs. And we are falling behind. Well I think the majority of people are stupid, and are completely happy living pointless lives till they die. At least if they are happy they aren’t raping me. We should be happy meeting that need at this point.

But seriously, we need parenting to push education. We need HARD AP classes to push the few smart kids(or maybe just the kids who aren’t genetically pre-disposed to be stupid and have parents that value education) and opportunities for them to attend the BEST schools. And this needs to happen everywhere, because prodigies can happen even in poor environments. The truth is average people in any economy does not need that much education. But leaders in industry and science need to be the best in the world. That is what derives progress. It’s sad but it’s true, it’s an oligarchy.

And then of coarse the smartest individuals almost always believe that society and most of its functions are silly and see no purpose in helping advance any facet of a large group of average people’s lives(this is true of individuals of the HIGHEST intelligence). So we don’t want to make people too smart.

Oh I will be a teacher, I want summers off, but I think students should not have three months of summer off.

You twat waffle. That would ensure beyond a shadow of a doubt that poor will beget poor.

Oh, and for the record my sister in law is a product of the elite hamburg school district. She finished her bachelors at Boston University and is in her second year at Harvard Dental right now. :ohyeah:

Teaching is a passion. I knew I wanted to teach since I was in 10th grade.

Anyone who gets into it for the “summers off” will realize the pay sucks and its exhausting work especially if you are teaching in the city.

From what I have heard the turnover rate is about five years. After five years the “lackluster” tend to get out. Probably after a few failed attempts at tenure.

I want to be rapped.

I really don’t want to offend any teachers, but my sister is going to be a teacher. Someone is actually already allowing her to be a substitute teacher. My sister is a complete dumb ass, I would not want any child to be watched by her, yet alone taught by her. / Rant

Oh and I <3 Jer Jer.

Parents need to be held accountable for their kids education.

$10 tax for every point less than 1600 on the SAT’s? lmao

How about dumb/lazy people should stop reproducing?

The President of the United States would say otherwise.
And the problem is part stupid people procreation, part family culture of not giving a damn, and part limitations based on where you go to school. The more rural, Southern, and low-income place you grow up, generally the worse the public schools are. But education cannot be neglected. It is our only comparitive advantage vs. the rest of the world that allows us to demand so much higher pay.

That may explain the south to a point but look at the city of Buffalo, some of those schools are absolutely amazing and are better equipped than many suburban schools and they are treated like garbage by the students.

Being poor is not an excuse for bad behavior especially when the state gives you the means to better yourself with an education.

Granted there are those kids that grow up in neglected households, but many of them have enough to make a foundation for themselves.

So how does longer schooling fit into all this?

I’m sure the welfare kings & queens everyone bitches about would love to send their children to school longer. Less time and money for them to spend at the expense of tax payers.

Smells like hypocritical lazy parents in this thread. Telling people to “step up” but you want the schools to take a load off your hands…

This thread = :picard:

Good point…

listening to my fiance talk about taking juggling as a required phys-ed class really made me wish i spent $25k a year @ a liberal arts college just to put it on my resume and end up nearly 6 figures in debt just with undergrad. thank got she was smart and got scholarships.
