Based on this link from the WD site it seems you can only run at 3gb/s.
I would try installing on a different, smaller/older drive and verify but it seems your drive is probably too fast and the issue.
Good catch. I was under the impression it’s a 6gb/s drive but I’m provisioning a new computer at work and fairly distracted. Confirmation is needed on the drive speed to be certain.

Newegg says it’s a 3gb/s so jump pins 5 & 6 to drop to 1.5gb/s

I think this was posted but it’s again talking about the storage controllers settings in the bios.
It also says Win 7 service pack 1 isn’t affected, what version of win 7 media do you have?
You could try jumping 5-6 and 7-8 both as well. Throttle the drive down to 1.5gb/s AND change the physical sector size in hopes of older machine compatibility. Worth a shot at this stage. LOL
Hope it helps.
I’ll try that as a last ditch effort. if not im willing to leave it with you. Im willing to pay for parts and labor. If you put time into it and still can’t figure it out you can keep it and I’ll return the wd HD. I use the 5.1 surround so I at least got my money out of that.
To be honest dont put money into it, you could build a computer that’s better, did I suggest swapping the DVD drive cables? It has to be something with the hard drive, I have a spare 40gig Sata drive I could try. Like I said get ahold of me and I’ll try my best.
I’m sure at $50 it was sold as is. Onyx did even offer to buy it back if it ended up not working. Sounds like he might need to get to an ATM shortly though.
ive just kind of skimmed this thread, but: Are you using a Windows 7 SP1 Install disc, or just win7 with no service packs. because the drive is an ‘advanced format’ drive, you will need at least win 7 sp1 to get it to install that way, properly.
