So Pyrexx I called Tri-Star Collision today about getting them to paint the rear calipers and they sent me to Northstar Hyundai, they have a handheld laser that matches paints, the problem was that the caliper is not exactly 3inches by 3 inches so it was hard for them to get an accurate reading off of my calipers, but they did manage to get a sample that was good enough, so I have them blending two paint samples tomorrow to see what ones is the closest possible, the price on it is about 90.00 for the paint, apparently it is enough to do two cars so this guys tells me,after the paint is bought I need to buy what is called a paint bomb to put the paint in and spray the calipers, yes Tri-star doesn’t want to it cause well it is already going to be $90 for the paint and well, why get someone else to do it and pay out the A$$ for it when we can do it for 90.00, that’s pricy enough for me.
'04 don’t have to have the knock sensor relocated. I’ve never had a problem with the car retarding the timing on 91 octane gas. There are a few places in town here that sell 94, ask the Skyline guys and Matt (ChromeDragon) where they are - I believe they are Husky stations.
I wasn’t too worried about the valve springs yet as I don’t usually drive the car hard, but as I build up the motor a little bit more I’d consider it. The BSR kit is the one I’m worried about, only because it more or less voids the engine warranty. If I was going to do that, I’d make sure my butterfly valves were loctited at the same time so they won’t bugger the engine and then Nissan refusing to fix it.
As for the paint, if you can do it (I’m useless with painting) I’d be in for it. Did they tell you how much a paint pen of that color would cost?
EDIT: Oh, and thanks for finding all this out/posting the info.
Well I dunno how hard it is to put on light coats of paint over a caliper, but it seems pretty straight forward, I phoned Western Pontiac and Buick and they actually make up ariosl cans off paint for people and it is only $21.00 for the exact colour that Northstar would make up, the PPG # of the paint is 5388. I’m going to pick up a can they mixed up for me at 3:30, so yeah that’s a lot better then $90.00
Wow, that is awesome to know, I love knowing that I can actually get some decent gas in my tank then, 91 octane just sux.
If you are thinking you want to do the valve springs down the road it is going to cost you the price of the cam install and at Least 6 hours of labour ontop of that to install the new vavle springs, so you might as well do it all at the same time, it will save you money in the long run. I did my butterfly screws 2 weeks ago and mine were in so thight that I couldn’t even get some of them out. The BSRK Is honestly worth it, It makes the car so much nicer to drive at high speed, especially when shifting, I dunno why you are so worried about having the warrty maybe voided, I mean have you ever had a problem with the engine? Trust me it is definately worth it, plus depending on where you get your car done and stuff, they will most likely “overlook” some mods for you I know Mills will for me.
Plus the only way to find out you have that mod done is to remove the lower oilpan, how often are you going to be having Nissan do that, Mossy Nissan In San Diego, calls the Balancer Shaft Removal Kit the “Two Hundred Dollar Oil Change,” because so many Spec’s down there get it done, I think you really should get it done, trust me I think I could feel the differnce that made almost as much as I felt the difference my Header made, obviously different feels, but both very noticeable.
Not too sure if Ericksen is very mod friendly or not…haven’t really explored it with them.
I won’t bother going with the valve springs just yet, not until I go F/I. Not much point since I won’t be revving it past redline anyway, so they won’t be doing me any good.
Oh, and by the way, I don’t know what side of the city you live on, but I found a new gas station that carries 94 today. It’s a Husky just off Anthony Henday and 34th Ave(?).
Couldnt this thread be in the tech section along with everyones elses tech questions? I can make it a sticky if that makes you guys feel more special.
Nah, just leave it here. I’m sure the sheer weight of the 240 support on this board will kill it soon enough. :E
Whoops, had a little fall through with the separation of this topic into it’s respective topics, so you’ll have to copy and paste your posts into the relevant topics. Then I can delete these ones.
Thanks guys.
Well, I’ve seen the disasters that have occured when trying to put information on one vehicle into one topic, so I opted to create a whole forum for you. That was my personal bad on trying to separate the topics for the Spec guys.
Well I don’t know if anyone is still following this confusing thread but I’d like to see this caliper paint you bought. It must be pretty sharp stuff? Is it heat resistant?. Also, the thing about calipers is that they are going to get brake dust on them, and they will get rock chips as well. I’ve painted mine twice with $9/can VHT red caliper paint. It’s tough as nails and works well, but I still have to touch them up occasionally. Are you going to get a $90 spray bomb made up every time you want ot repaint them?
umm i think he already found the alternative to the spray bomb that hyundai had and went with a gm thing for 20$ i believe and yeah the calipers will get hot and will probably flake the paint off, but they can touch it up. Oddly enough, once i was told that this guy had stickers made for his calipers thatt said mazda, i didnt believe him, told him they would get to hot and fall off, low and behold they were still there. Beats me. Good ol hotplates. Shouldnt get that much rocks in there though or your doing some funky driving.
The heat depends on how you’re driving too. On the street, if you’re driving normally I don’t think you’d get enough heat into the calipers to make the paint flake off. If you track the car or drive really hard with some hard brake use, that’s a different story.
Well I paint my calipers, with the Spray paint can and the colour is a very very close match, and they look awesome I will take some pics of them soon, and I’ll post it on my website. so check out my website from time to time to see if I have posted them, and I’ll post up a msg. in here (if I don’t forget) and let you know if I put the pics up or not yet.
Does anyone else feel very confused looking at this thread, half the posts are mine and I’m still confused
Missed the post about your painting your calipers…nice!
This thread is probably a total write off, but that’s ok - we’ll just have to start others.
