Moderate Republican (oxymoron these days) Senator Arlen Specter has switched to the Democrats. He was doomed for re-election if he didn’t, since the only Republicans left in very blue PA are hardcore conservatives and he was way too centrist for them. This means that as soon as Norm Coleman’s frivolous legal shit is overruled and Al Franken is seated, the Democrats now have the magic 60 votes to override a filibuster and can hammer through pretty much Obama’s whole agenda without any input from the Party of No
For the non political nerd, this means you WILL see health care reform this year, along with some other key parts of Obama’s agenda.
And I thought the NFL draft was huge. This will be bigger than any NFL contract evAr but we will never see the numbers he got paid.:rolljerk: What a fucking WHORE.
If you listened to his press conference he basically spelled out the problems of the Republican party. They’ve pushed everyone who is not hardcore right out of the party. The fact that you can’t deviate at all from the Rush party line only means that you are going to have a small party.
I would not be at all surprised that in the next few years you have one of two scenarios: A new third party, or more Republicans switching.
PS: Simply having 60 seats does not guarantee 60 votes.
I don’t see any new Republicans getting elected the way the country is now, I don’t care who they are or what their message is. There are waaaaaaaaaay too many people in this country with low self esteem and no ambition. Once Acorn gets them all to vote the Republicans are done for good. This is why a democracy can only succeed temporarily. Welcome to the USSA.
I see the libertarian party running big in the next presidential. depending on the economic events. that will be the big decision maker. if it gets better everyone will forget the next day and everyone will start over spending again. But if it doesn’t get better then whether its his fault or not. Obama will be ousted hard and a Libertarian will take office or atleast be the best running 3rd party in decades.
And you guys are pretty niave if you believe this had anything to do with Specter’s ideals. He was going to lose the election if he ran as a Republican so he switched to save his cushy job. It’s just like when Joel Giambra, a life long Democrat, became a Republican when he lost the Dem nomination for County Executive.
I think it was much more of a ploy to get reelected, but I also see him getting frustrated with what the republican party has turned into in the last couple of years.
I wouldn’t call him a democrat, but I wouldn’t call him a republican now either.
If he only wanted to get re-elected in the Republican primary, he would have voted against the stimulus plan with the rest of the party of no. So we’ll call it 90% re-election, 10% ideals
That one vote was blocking a good portion of obama’s wish list, simply because he’s a Democrat. How is anything supposed to get done if they won’t let it even come to a vote? Bush hammered through almost all of his first-term agenda with 50 votes plus Cheney. Now that they have 60 seats, assuming they all get in line, I suspect all Republicans will do is vote No on everything and stake their political future on the country failing…
I love how the Obama zombies don’t see all of the taxes and fees required to pay this GIGANTIC spending of Obama. It really is funny. Yeah, we will just tax the rich. That should cover $13 trillion.:mamoru:
