I put in a jdm speedometer that came from a s13 into my s13 that also has a s13 sr20det engine in it. The jdm speedometer goes up to 280kmh. The problem is that when I start the car the speedometer reads at 20kmh before I start moving! Any ideas on what the problem could be since I was told ths speedometer was a plug & play unit.
maybe its just where it sits…ive seen cars do that before…have someone go 100km’s on the highway and you go 100km’s on the highway if ur going faster than him u know somethings wrong
uhm I have a stock SR speedo, it only goes to 180km
you may have a nismo unit there
plug/play, who told you this?/where did you procure such an item?
Ebay and the jdm speedo plugged into the stock speedo connector perfectley and looks the same as stock speedo.
You’re gonna need to check and make sure the needle isn’t stuck. When touching it, it should move around with incredible ease. See if something is blocking it and double-check the peg/stopper’s location.
The speedometer could also be bad or overly stuck, or could be incompatible perhaps.
Post pics and maybe we can help some more.
My speedo is from Nissan, goes to 240km/h, and has never had a problem. BTW, the Nismo speedometer goes to 260km/h, so i’d be curious as well as to what yours looks like and where it came from (other than eBay).
Let us know…
I am not able to take a picture and I know about the nismo speedometers. This one looks just like our stock s13 speedos but it reads up to 280kmh. This was the first one I have ever seen like this and I have been looking for a speedo for quite a while. Btw I tested my speed compared to someone driving in another car and it seems that my speedo is off by +20kmh.
hey if its 20km’s off then just go 20km’s less everywhere
easy fix HAHA
Easier way is to hook up a GPS unit to a laptop and it shows your speed there. Even my stock speedo is off by like 5 kms at 150
What’s your point? I’m just throwing out another method for future reference, maybe after he gets it fixed to test whether it works or not so he doesn’t have to bother a friend to drive beside him just for this…
maybe someone had the needle off to try to install new faces… maybe they installed a new face and it goes to 280?? Anyways, maybe the guy was installing the new faces and he put the needle back on wrong.
Find some face installation instructions and re-install the needle.
How do the rest of the needles look compared to the old unit? Does your temp still read the same? When you fill up, does the needle look proper? etc.
Hope this helps.

please take a pic of the speedo unit… we are all curious to see what this piece looks like.
If you move the needle counterclockwise below ‘0’ by roughly 20km/h you should be able to correct the overspeed issue.
