Squealing sound from front/engine area

Ok so a few nights ago I went out and after a little while (maybe 5-10min)
I heard a squealing sound from the engine area. My revs were normal
and I wasn’t driving fast (60km/h around 2500-3000rpm).

The squeal last probally about 10sec or so and then I slowed down to take
it in a parking lot and the sound stopped and didn’t bother again for the
rest of the night.

I went out again last night, and I heard the squealing sound briefly and
as well it only lasted maybe 10sec or so. Didnt’ come back on for the
rest of the night.

When I heard the squeal, the only thing I had running in the car was my
stereo (not pounding loud) and I had my heater on as well (runing at 2x or 3x).

Is the sound my belts or brakes or what? Anything I should try out to
find out exactly what it is? This is the first time I have heard anything
since buying the car last April, and I have put about 8000KM on it since then.

The belts look pretty new and I am guessing the dealer might
have changed it when I bought the car (April 03).

I tugged on the belt and didn’t feel any play. And like I said it only made
the noise, shortly after (5min or so) the car was turned on.

hey gonad, i had a really loud squeeling sound comming from my cara few month ago also. at first, it would squeel for a little while then stop and then it would start up again. after a few weeks, it would almost on a regular basis, would squeel when i first started up the car and then go away again… enough of me babling on, just seeing if i am relating at all to the same sound your car is having…anyways, it ended up being the surpentime belt ( if thats how you spell it, but im sure you get the just of it) it just needed ot be tightened. when your car warms up, the belt expands and is probably comming loose…nothing a quick tighten shouldnt fix.

240’s dont have Serpetine Belsts.

Goand even if the belts are nice and snug and are fairly new, if any water
or moisture gets splashed on them it will squeel for a bit then go away.

Shouldn’t be anything to worry about.

my mistake

like i said, my guess is that you need your belts tightened…clearly not the surpentine…it fixed the squeeling on my car!

additionally, if its really cold out the rubber gets very hard and doesnt grip as well untill it warms up some, thats why you would get the 10 secs or so of squeel. Next time it starts turn off your heater and everything and if it goes away then its the one to your alternator, same goes for your ps belt, if its squeeling and u turn your wheel back and forth and the squeel changes its most likely that, if its only for 10 secs though i wouldnt worry about it.

If it was your brakes(it wasn’t your brakes) then you would only hear it when u apply your brakes, and i dont think you were stopping for 10 seconds. Its your belts, if that keeps up(most likely from the cold) then probably the next time u rev it really hard, it will snap. My friend has a VW cabrio, he went through 6 belts in the past month cuz he decided a civic will not beat him no matter what. Its the weather, dont drive too harsh, thats the only advise i can give you. Tightening you belt might not work well either. if it gets cold, and you turn on you engine, it will squeak really loud or even break, at least to my experiance. you can try it. i hope it works out.

Check your tensioners, tensioners tend to squeel once and a while, espeacialy when they are starting to fail. Pop the hood and look for any rollers that are not turning “true”.
If in fact you belts are old, try twisting them, if you can twist it more than a half turn, odds are they are worn. You cannot pull on a belt and tell if it’s worn.
Another thing to do is spray some silcone spray on the belts while the car is running. this will help lubricate the belt and prevent it from squeeling.
