SR blacktops

Just a quick question on the S13 blacktop, what is the main differnece between it and a redtop(not the valve covers for who ever is goin to be an ass :P) I havent found any reliable info. Everywhere ive seen they same power and torque are the same, I know the S14 blactops have a t28bb and vvt. Just curious b4 i make any any real decisions.

i think black top is just newer… and has a different ecu? i dont remember

s13 blacktop is a newer version of the redtop with no differences that i am aware of, s14 motors have vvt and t28…

black tops have more power too and stronger internals.

Red-tops and the Flat VC black tops have a high port head. It flows better than the S14 or S14 motors.

Basicly once fully built the High port head has the power advantage.

However the low port head in the S14 motors is good for mid range, which is nicer on a closer to stock set up.

Try to find a good Red-top or a flat Black top.

the early model black tops are newer then the red tops, and often have a little less millage. I believe the ECU is the same, but not sure. the redtop has a little extra emision control gadgets i believe. and i think the blacktop had something connected to the wastegate vacuum line to hold the flap closed a little longer to increase spoolup, once again, not 100% sure.

Could be true but there is not exact way of verifying milage.

Wrong, Ecu is different but will work as long as you change the ground on the O2 sensor

Other way around, newer has more gadgets.

Nope. They are the same, Except the S14’s came with a T28

Well…thank you mister know it all

So you personally dont think the S14 motor is worth the extra cash for the 17hp, t28, and VVT? Is it any differnt to install into a 180 than say a S13 redtop. My power goals are around 250-280whp and id like to be able to make that the esiest and most reliable way I can. I just dont see me being able to do it with my CA reliably and it would take probally around the same amount of $$ that id spend on a motor as it would to build up my CA, to be that same HP but most of all Torque as a SR. And im tired of searching day and night for parts.
One last question, the SR20DE came in the 96 sentra se-r right, or was tha just in the US?

it’s all good! Like I said in my post, I wasn’t sure, just rumors I had heard over the past few years. However if there are no differences except the O2 sensor, then why are the blacktops always more expensive and more desirable?

I’m guessing rareity, and lower km’s. And some guy said they were better once lol

Depends on what black top you are talking about

There is a Flat VC, Early edition (found in 94-96 180SX)
Then the late edition (97+ 180SX)
The the notch covers
S14- Basicly self-explanitory
S15- same as above

The later flat ones had S14 external accesories.

Black tops are rare-er and generaly have less KM’s on them. Generaly is a big generalization.

Casting numbers on the pistons are the only way to tell how stong the bottom end it.

54C’s are desirable but enjuku has found them in everthing. From Red-tops to S14’s

What the hell man? Everytime I think about doing something to my car your doing the exact same thing to yours lol.

Great minds think alike
