sr20det trouble

ya it is recirculated

This problem is mind-boggling…one of my uncle’s friends brought over a 180SX and he seems to be having almost the exact same problem you describe, I’m going to be helping him out with diagnosis and repair. I will keep you posted.

I had the same problem with my s14 sr, i took it around the corner it was idling rough and bogging out at 3000rpm, really rough idling. When id start the car up it smelt like pure gas, turned out to be i had a cylinder not firing cus of a sparkplug, ignition cable, try that maybe

Big cams typically result in a lean condition…not rich.

And why are you being a dick? I could see maybe if you were giving accurate advice but…in your case I just don’t get the hostility.

It is much more likely there is a leak somewhere after the MAF. I’d recomend a boost leak test…I bet you find something.

Agreed.
I am no genius or mechanic but in my mind the bigger cams increase flow in the head not at the MAFS, so the ECU would not see an increase in flow coming in from the MAFS but rather a leaner mix going out at the O2 sensor… and we all know how crap the stock narrowband O2 sensors are. Considering my narrowband A/F guage was reading rich at WOT from 2000RPM to redline but the truth of the matter was that while Dan was tuning my SR the actual A/F’s were reading 16.0 at 4000RPM which is really lean.

Anyways,

Check for a boost leak after the MAFS.
Try a different MAFS rather than just cleaning yours.
Try another SR ECU. a buddy of mine had an SR running like shit and it ended up being the ECU, after further inspection inside we found a cracked and faulty solder point.
Check all your injectors! i had a leaking injector and it caused my motor to run richer, not by a whole lot but it was a factor

Check all the basics and try new parts on all the basics. If you have any other friends with an SR spend a saturday morning and try parts from their SR on yours until you find the problem. Things like FPR, MAFS, injectors, Spark plugs and coils can all be swapped back and forth easily.
Come to Mississauga and I’ll help you out even!

Good luck and keep us posted!

so iv got the fuel at idle sorted out for the most part i think.

the timing was way off dont know but now is corrected.

there isnt any lag that i can feel anymore and seems to run alright.

but now when driving and i release the gas pedel to come to a stop it sometimes just bogges down and dies.

most times when it dies its starts right back up and idle perfect, but sometime is wont start i hit the gas as i crank and it starts.

im out of idea and i dont want to drive much util i figure out what the issue is.

iv drivin about 30 km and no codes yet.

and ideas

thanks scott

We found the problem with my friend’s 180…there was a crack in one of the cooling fins of the SMIC, it was incredibly small. What I did was I pressurised the charge pipes via an air compressor and blocked off the ends of the system where it would connect to the TB and turbo compressor elbow. There was a tiny hiss coming from somewhere that was inaudible when the engine was turned on, I quickly pin-pointed where I heard the hiss coming from, squirted some warm soapy water over the suspected area and saw air bubbles escaping. Grabbed a new SMIC, installed it and now it runs like gold. Like Happy240SX said, check for an air leak…you’d be surprised how much even the slightest little vac leak can throw off your engine’s overall performance.

the bogging down at stop sounds a lot like a faulty IACV. on sohc’s its on the rear of the intake manifold, not the easiest to take off but get it off and clean it out good. The solanoid is most likely sticking and not allowing extra air into the engine when your TB closes causing the car to bog and almost stall out.
