On a little sidenote… since when has this thread turned from a SR vs KA into a 302 one?
This is just one of those debates where you have an equal amount
of people favouring the two motors.
Both have their disadvantages, both have their advantages. I dunno if
I speak for most, but it all comes down to one thing: money.
To me that’s whate everything comes down to when modding a car.
Even if you are a skilled mechanic and know your way around cars, it
all comes down to money.
MONEY
The R200 is a really strong diff. Drag launches are hard on any diff… but IMHO it will hold up fine in street driving.
Just to add to this, as some of you may know, some of the old 280Z’s had the R200 diff. Now it can handle decent power, but with the now very common SBC swaps, these diffs do tend to give way or require rebuilds over time. They are simply being pushed to their max capabilities.
But yes in normal street driving, they will hold out, but nevertheless, many people have resorted to swapping to Corvette IRS setups or swapping to the R230
I find it incredible…the lengths many of you will go to keep a Nissan engine in the car. WHO CARES what powers it. I don’t have much money to sped and I suspect that many of you don’t either. Do some homework…what is the best/cheapest/most reliable way to get a powerful car. Swaps??OK…
Here are the swaps I would do on an s13. (and this is not based on what some magazine/internet board said…blah, blahblah)
4 cylinder-hmmmm…already has a pretty good 4-banger in it. SR is good engine too. If I had $4000 that many spend on the engine, I’d run a 4g63/4g64 hybrid. 2.4L and Much more balls than KA/SR/CA with 8500rpm capability and massive aftermarket knowledge. Easy to get BIG power out of. No crankwalk…
6 cylinder…did the VG. I’d really like to see a 7mgte. (HG fault is a mythical urban legend that becomes reality to the uninformed). Cheap, fast etc…The RB25 can’t touch this.($wise) By the time you get the RB out of the warehouse you could have a running 350+whp 240.
V8- 302 …not that I like this idea but it isn’t really bad.
BTW.Anyone ever put a GM turbo 3.8 in a 240?? I saw one in toronto in a 1st gen Celica (Early 70’s)
Point is , just build your car to be a fast car…not part of a “JDM” club or a SR/KA clique.
You can pick up an SR for alot less than $4000…half that number and your closer to the mark.

Sure but factor in the parts that need to be purchased and the resulting cost of the swap itself becomes higher. I still think it can be done for under $4k though.
An SR Swap under $4000 why not?
$2200 For a Complete Engine Set.
$200 For Ignitor
$100 For SMIC
$100 For IC Piping (ABS)
$100 For Misc Fluids
$2700 Total
What else am I missing?
Thow in $300 for Misc Brackets and other parts…
You have a turnkey SR for $3000
Too much pride… and proud of it…
Cheers! :D/
I’m much more proud of being able to hack my wack through an unconventional swap, making my own motormounts, researching stuff till I fall asleep every night.
This is the main idea…
We’re not Porsche owners, we’re not rich (at least I’m not).
I have no affiliation with any particular brand. I know certain chassis have certain advantages, but how many times have these been matched with outstanding powerplants??(or viceversa). It’s all getting the most for the least.
On one hand we could knock Mr. Hutchinson and his expensive project…but it’s not just about the car we end up with(or he could have bought the same set-up from someone else cheaper). It’s about how much we learn in the process too (or else I’d just be selling computers or headhunting or something). Ask Adam how much he’s learned. I’m sure he has learned more than he would have had he just swapped an SR.
He has an inexhaustable supply of cheap engines to mod, compare and mod again. He will learn more than everyone else here who is afraid to mess up their cylinder head because it’s so expensive.
I am all stoked up on an ancient engine tech right now…
2.3L Ford turbo. SVO, Merkur style…in an old Japanese platform. Think 1st gen RX7.
A powerful and CHEAP engine from a crappy chassis into a lighter smaller chassis that had a gutless powerplant from the manufacturer.
Best thing is that this highly upgradable powerplant is dirt cheap!!!
I can afford to beat the hell out of it every weekend…think you’re beating me?? I’ll just crank more boost, run more nitrous etc.
As a matter of fact I’d put one in a S13 too!
(And some have put 16v heads on this engine too)
Anyway I’m done rambling…
Rob
I’m sorry if I sounded irate or preachy…I guess I just get tired of hearing all the hype about what “you need” to get a bit of power. A little research goes a ways, but a lot of research and a little work sourcing the parts goes much further.
^^^ Don’t think I never read that shit Bob.
BTW I like SR’s because I’m poor and stupid.
if everyone wanted to be all JDM tyte and ish Yo!
why not take a lesson from the japanese on how they think?
they don’t give a rats ass about bragging right, what motor you have, ect. ect. it all comes down to the power you are putting on the ground, and nothing else. They respect every motor, and realise that all motors have alot of potential, just matter on the time and money spent on each motor (as well as know how).
so instead of bashing eachothers motors, why not praise them, and respect what people have accomplished as personal goals, and not just who gets the cover of SCC or any other high gloss toilete paper.
These motors are very similiar in #'s, and both have the potential to spank eachother. Who cares? if you seriously have a beef with these or any other motors, take it to the track, and let the motors speak for themselves!!!
This is why, in Japan, peeps will swap out the VG motor and drop an SR into a z32, or pull an RB out of their skyline and swap a supra motor in, or vice versa, and not recieve any flak. Imagine all the crap someone would take in N. America if they pulled their TT supra motor out and swapped in an SR? Here they would bash, but in japan they would say, “lets see what the new motor does”
its 2 totally different ways of thinking, and for this reason, the japanese will always be ahead of us, not because they get the good shit, but because they have equal respect for any and all motors, and that respect carries on for people and their personal choices and dreams, which makes everyone all the wiser.
its a freaking shame…
=D> Very Well Said
Ahead of us?? Hey I like their toys and everything but let’s not get ahead of ourselves…check motorports much?? Japan gets handed regularly by US and Europe at most events. That’s why they made an “unsport” like drifting. (dons flame retardant suit  )
i never made any mention of their driving skill, now did I? Although japanese riders are usually in the top 3 for motor bike racing.
Really?? where?? when?? Unless it’s been in the last year and a half …I ain’t seen it.
