stalling coming to a complete stop please help,

Alright there guys I know that there are a few of you out there that have had this happen anyways. I just through a new starter in my 91 hatch (that is auto yes i Know get rid of it). Ever since the change I have noticed that the tach was dipping below 600 when applying the brake to come to a complete stop. Well now today i was coming to a light and it just stalled out. I am thinking the o2 sensor but am unsure any help would be greatly appreaciated I am not looking forward to rush hour traffic!!!

Please help

Bryce

what makes you think its the O2 sensor? you’re clearly wrong. If you put it in neutral does it do that too?

it is part of the engine wiring harness coming loose / corroded.
Such a common problem.
Unplug / clean / Re plug all your connections.

yeah its not the O2 sesor, considering it started to happen when you changed your starter, i bet that is the problem. I bet the starter is broken and because of that, it is putting pressure on the flywheel constantly slowing it down and causing it to stall.

i have the same problem. what set of connectors should i clean out?

Yeah it could be the starter not disengaging properly … but I doubt it. Just as likely it they knocked some wires around and a connection is barly working.

Well if your problem is like most other people, sometimes you will notice your motor seems like it wants to stall. Even if it doesn’t it idles way too low (500rpm or so) (and when you put a big strain on the engine … ie braking at a stop it will stall out). If this starts happening leave your car running, get out and start wiggling the connections. When it revs back up (750rpm) then you know which one isn’t working. It is usually one of the ones close to the TPS.

I agree it happened to me.

I will inform you all of this problem, more than likely , like 95% sure its the Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid not working properly, and locking up your TC when it shouldnt, causing your vehicle to studder and possibly stall at lower rpm’s.

What is the TPS?

Throttle Position Sensor, it’s so the ECU knows how far open the trottle is.
It’s usually the electronic gizmo on the opposite side of the trottle cable connection on your throttle body.

It itself probably isn’t screwed up but having a flakey connection can screw up the ground for the whole system, and modern cars HATE having screwed up grounds.

If your looking form the front to the back of the car the wires will be on the right of the TB. Clean all 3.

It used to be with this type of problem that you had a vacuum leak.

^^ wtf?

^^ wtf?[/quote]
Thats what I said when I saw this post haha.

i was in bryce’s car the other day,

his plgus were pretty fouled so we swapped them out, apparently it helped a little.

bascially the problem is this;

when he comes to a stop he idles okay, but then the needle slowly dips below 500, studders a bit then sometimes will stall, and sometimes will slowly creep back up to normal idle.

he says the spark plugs helped a little, which is a good thing i guess, but the problem is not fixed.

Alright first of guys thanks for the input me and bing changed the plugs last night and yeah it seemed to help but it is still fuckered. It is actually really starting to piss me off anyways i am going to clean all the connections and replug. The issue is that it only does it sometimes that is what is the pisser, and if you can imagine trying to two peddle an auto in rush hour traffic that is what i am doing. I have two questions from here one is more than likely electrical? and two what about a vacuum leak would that through it off? Cheers

Bryce

Will be back on later to update this fuckered situation

cheers

and any suggestions let me know i gotta get into T.O. tommorrow it will be fun just the thought of it is amusing

Why don’t you do the standard maintenance procedures.

Plugs, wires, distributer cap, fuel filter, clean the throttle body (:D) and see if any of these fix it. It’s gotta be done sometime or another so you may as well try!

CHeck your TPS… I had this problem after I cleaned my TB last summer… I tapped the TPS out of possition causing my car to stall in idle.

Try it.

DRE

sounds a lot like what I meantioned before.
When it idling low does jiggling any of the connections seem to help?
jiggling the TPS ?

if not then start looking to mechanical stuff.

Alright there guys sure enough after poppong the hoood it seems that after all that two footing sven and a few others were right. I pulled all three wires around the throttle body and sure enough it is sticking at 600

I am now wondering is there any way that I could improve this better connectors maybe not sure but don’t have the time to source until friday

any suggestions greatly appreciated and like I said before thanks to all the guys that helped.

Cheers
