Ok, so I’ve noticed this happen a few times and it kinda puzzles me as to
why it happened.
On several occasions, I’ve braked quick and noticed sometimes my
engine stalls just before I make a complete stop. It starts right back up
so no problem there.
What’s weird is I can’t tell why it stalls. My braking method is basically I
brake while I’m in gear and only hit the clutch around the 1000rpm mark
so I could be hitting the clutch late and just stalling the car normally.
It happens too quick that I can’t tell if that’s the case.
Dunno if this is another issue but if I’m idling in neutral (at 650rpm)
and I step on the brake, the RPM drops to about 600 or 500rpm. I let
go of brake and the rpm goes back to 650. Is that normal as well?
So, question is, is there some other problem that could be involved here
or am I just mistakengly braking too late and stalling the car?
Actually if you brake with the car IN gear, it will stop a little faster.
Because apart from the brakes, there’s load from the engine slowing the car down. So that’s how I always do it.
But I only do the last minute clutch thing if it’s like a panic situation where
usually it happens too fast to take time to think.
Yeah i do that too sometimes, but it supposedly eats up more gas and wears out the syncros. Might be BS though. Even still i rather just get use up the extra second and wear out my pads or rotors than stall my engine. Work on your timing. Even with fast panic braking i manage to pull it out of gear. I guess my hands should be on 10 and 2, but i always have one hand on the shiftknob.
Well I try an avoid driving like Rice boy (left hand at 12 o’lcok, right hand
on shift knob), so my hands are usually 9-3 when I’m driving normally.
On a busy street it’s usually rice-boy style but I have my hand on the
e-brake instead of knob.
I’ll see what I can find out about the brake booster. One other thing I
noticed (or mabe I’m imagining it) is my steering has gotten a LITTLE bit
stiffer then usual. Hrm…
The steering get stiff when you are about to stall because the vein pump is isn’t going fast enough to creat preasure. The stalling or almost stalling problem is prob do to a vaccume leak. I had the same prob. look under your intake for 5 vaccume lines they run to you charcole canster fuel cell ect… check that area for broken or split lines or they may have just fallen
Also check the hoses running off your intake to your plenum.
Well the stiffness in steering wheel is not when I’m about to stall but
anytime. It just doesn’t feel as light as before. I dunno, could be cold
weather?
Maybe it is time to change the fluid. If it is old enough there is a good chance there is water in it. Power stearing fluid is hydroscopic(i think that is how its spelt) and will absorbe moisture. If thats not it then i don’t know. try some Lucas power stearing conditioner it is suposed to get rid of hard spots. It can be found a canadian tire.
Sound like your altenator to me.
When you brake really quick, your altenator will slow down and not make as much power.
When you put you foot on the brake your, drawing power, decreasing the rpms as a result
Try this next time, at night have the lights on and then rev the engine, if you can notice you lights getting brighter when reving, then I would suspect the altenator.
Measure the voltage that it’s pumpimg at idel, not sure what the spec are tho.
Ok, I think this problem is not due to my lack of timing with pressing the
clutch at the last minute. Something is wrong definately.
Today, coming to a red light, I was in 2nd gear goin pretty fast (not sure
but I was around 6000rpm in 2nd gear) when I pushed clutch in, and
started braking heavily.
This is when I noticed the RPM drop somewhere around 300rpm or so.
What I haven’t mentioned is I have an OBX filter hooked up and that I
don’t have two hoses hooked up to the intake. One hose is a big one that
is under the intake, and a tiny one. The one near the throttle is hooked
up but the hose is kinda bent and isn’t in a perfect curve (restricted flow
I guess).
I dunno what these two hoses are so anywho, I’m gonna replace my
intake tomorrow with the stock one and see what I experience.
Oh and yes, my steering has gotten sitffer as of late; I’ll be checking the
steering fluid for that.
A plenum is a fancy name for an intake manifold (or intake collector). Usually the V8 guys refer to there intake manifold as a plenum on the VQ45DE motor.
I would reconnect all lines, especially the ones on the intake pipe before the MAF. I left my iat sensor disconnected, and my car seems to run better without it on (I don’t recomend doing this, just stating from my experience). There used to be a low RPM bog on acceleration, and it would go away after 2000rpm’s.
I downshift while braking, it saves your brakes and feels alot safer (in case you NEED to be in gear to make a last minute manuevre).
