i don’t stall in idle, but i stall when i shift the car in neutral as a brake and slide towards a light. (the rpm goes down)
this has started to happen these couple of days when it’s starting to get really cold. there’s a fluctuating rpm on idle too…but doesn’t stall
i have a ghetto ram air mod from a grill where my day time running lights use to be. also i think i’m leaking coolent. i get like around 400 on a full tank?
any suggestions on what might be wrong?? I stalled like 3 times on my way home today. thanx
hissing sound is rare, with a leak there will be no sound. To check coolant leaking, check your oil for a brown opaqueness to it, or let car idle and look for dripping coolant. For gas mileage 400 is pretty good, But you can try changing your air filter, sparkplugs, and wires to see if that helps.
maybe your ghetto ram air is forcing the TB open when it shouldnt be and allowing air in… and your TPS reads closed so your engine stalls itself out… (if that is in fact what the problem is… thats just an idea of what was wrong)
mine did something similar when i was going anything higher than 60 cuz my ghetto ram wasnt allowing my hood to close so I assume it was just forcing too much air in when it shouldnt have been… i fixed it so my hood closes now it doesnt stall out
today i noticed that my hicas light seems to be on, and would only turn off like 15 minutes later.
and there is a weird “grinding+whining” noise coming from the left rear wheel well section whenever i slow to a light or when i move from a standstill. seems to disappear when i go faster.
i got that too. well more of a squelling but on the passngers side.
i cheaked my pads and sqeler and there good nothing is rubbing form what i can see. do that same.

Back to your original question - I recently chased a problem like you are describing on my wife’s '91 automatic SE with HICAS. Rough idle and stalling at stop lights. Turned out to be the intake manifold gasket (between the manifold & cylinder head). With age they apparently get brittle and start to fall apart. When I pulled the intake off, there was a huge piece completely gone at the #4 cylinder. The proper diagnostic is to put a piece of hose to your ear and then move the other end around to see if you can hear an extra loud sucking noise at idle. The Nissan parts guy told me they have recently been getting a run on them, I quess they die after about 12 years of underhood heat!!! Inexpensive fix - lot’s of time though.
This used to happen to my car. Some days it would suddenly drop to a dangerously low idle, and sometimes clutch in and break would add enough strain on it to stall it. For me the problem was one of the main engine harnesses connections (check the 2 that are right by the throttle body). Cleaning it up and adding some electrical grease fixed it up for me.
Well now this is happening to me
On my way to work it staled out on a turn (talking on phone, put in clutch to turn cause no hands to gear down and bam its dead!) and the worst part is the steering went tight (no power steering) and I didn’t know what was going on. Then I saw the hicus light on and noticed it was dead stared it up and kept going. Then on my way home it happed 2 more times. Going to play with the wires I hope that’s what it is.
The exact same thing is happening to my car too…1st time I was shifted into neutral and was slowly coming to a red light so I applied brake and then it stalled…2nd time I was going into a right turn so I didnt wanna downshift so I put it into neutral and applied a lil brake and was going like 50km/hr and it stalled and my power steering went dead…couldnt turn right and almost hit another car since I couldnt stay in the right lane…
So what exactly is the problem???I thought it dealt with my clutch since I have clutch problems b4…but no
