Ok i know steelers are > my life and steelers are > pitt, etc etc…
anyway, why is it every year they cry about the field after the WPIAL championships. IT’S FOOTBALL FOR CHRIST SAKE!!! the field is gonna be beat up and muddy. How could you complain about it when you get paid hundred thousands-millions to do it. Don’t any of them remeber they used to be kids too. Don’t you think it really means something when u are a 17 year old kid playin in an NFL stadium? I don’t give a fuck about those NFL players, they don’t live here and didn’t pay taxes to build that place as far as i’m concerned they need to shut their greedy mouth and play some fuckin ball. Is your mind int he right place when u are worring about the grass. Is bettis the only player on the team that gets the bigger picture all the time? BOTH teams gotta play on that field.
and someone mentioned Pitt using the field…“its a conflict of interest” are u serious…that place got built when pitt jumped on board as a package deal, pitt uses the stadium, the steelers use the south side works, that was the deal. i guess they’d rather practice at the 30 yard field they used too. Go play in a fuckin dome if you don’t wanna get dirty.
you wanna know the real problem, sissy grass! its stuff that is grown at giant farms and is so perfect it won’t take a beating. U think if they had that thick ass shit that grows up in schenly park we’d have this problem? Heated field!!! Some much for the play football in two inches snow attitude. We have a good team but are really the STEELERS or just a bunch of TIN MEN???
i keep hearing that we have some goofy kind of hybrid grass/turf that injures everyone who steps on it in the wrong weather… i have no clue about the validity of that though…
yeah they have artificial that is woven in with the real shit to correct what happend in the first few years of heinz. the only way to solve it is deeper roots. I’ve never been on heinz field but i’ve been on PNC park’s grass and they stuff is so sissy, you pull it and the roots come right out with the blade. Its the same natural grass that is at heinz. There is a lot of sand content in the dirt too for drainage but you fix one problem and it crates another. The grass is not real thick either, its like a guys head with hair plugs. i just don’t see why guys are complaining, i guess they never had to play on field that was so dusty cause of lack of grass they oil it down. my point is they are playing football on grass in the north east in the winter, its not pretty. Stop talking like they are arizona cardinals and act like a steeler. the visiting team is supposed to complain about the field. It was one of the home playoff games against the oakland raiders in the 70’s. the tarp somehow got a tear in it where the rain froze and iced from the hash marks to the sideline on both sides. some belive it was done on purpose to slow down cliff branch but steelers of that team said what u are supposed to in that situation, “we both are playing on the same field”
they probably care because if they blow out a knee and end their carreer they will lost the ability to play the game they love as a profession, and making millions of dollars doing it. You arent out there playing in it, so YOU quit your bitching. Its not like there arent other stadiums in the Northeast, or where they have snow… NE, Buffalo, NYC, Baltimore, Washington, Green Bay…
All of those places seem to be able to have half decent fields. Can you imagine how ripped up a field is when they have that many games on one field. Big boys, not high school flag football. Its pussy ass turf to begin with, its half sand, get that shit wet with 350lb guys digging all through it… nga plz. And dont even try to compare PNC with Heinz field. The Steelers wear cleats. The Pirates wear ballerina shoes.
yeah in between the hashes it looked really tore up the other night. i think ppl complain about the field being broken down by the time the steelers play on it, because that game is ‘more important’ than the high school or college games. if the guys r trying to make cuts and the field isnt allowing them to, it might somewhat make Hienz field look bad. i say that, because the anouncers or half time shows might comment about it, and it might somewhat makes us look bad because the field should be ready on game day. injuries might also by an issue. i dunno, just some stuff that came to mind.
Alot of the other fields, like Baltimore, Seattle, etc… have artifical turf that isn’t woven with anything real, or VERY little real, so it doesn’t get torn up or ate up as bad. I was on Heinz Field last year for the WPIAL championships and I was really suprised at how shitty the surface was. Very little traction, the ground was REALLY hard (you’d think it would be normal or even soft with it being heated?), and the grass just came up in chunks when one of the kids would cut on it. I’ve been on some nice high school fields around the area, TJ, E. Allegheny, Ringgold, and Elizabeth Forward that have the artificial grass and it grips great and really stands up to abuse from soccer, band, football, and gym classes usually… Whether there is some reason why the Steelers aren’t using it down there, or if it wouldnt stand up to professional and ocllege athletes as compared to a shitload of high school kids, I dunno.
pnc park doesnt have 300 pound lineman pushing each other around in the outfield… it is just unexcusable to have turf that bad, you cant cut in sharp, kick or do anything, the grass over there is all messed up because of the base, they need to realize pittsburgh is not the ideal climate to have real grass for as many games as they play on it
no they need to stop with the crying shit and play some ball. mike, you brought up a point about guys not wanting to tear their knee. well u do realize guys are gettin paid far more, have a better pension, health benifits and a lot players have insurance policies if they weren’t able to play again. This argument would work in the 60’s when they pay sucked but those are the guys who didn’t complain and fields were way worse. all i’m saying is football is mud, football is dirt.
u’d be surpized how beat up a baseball field is after a home stand, i mean u are the guys that always say they just stand out there in the same place all game, imagine what that does to grass after a whole summer. sure football is far brutal on it that baseball but i’m giving you first hand knowledge on it so believe me.
to say the field condition is a reflection on the city is laughable. how about the fact that a good bit of people drive home from those games totally wasted, thats something the city can be proud of. MADD had the nerve to ask for a donation one day on my phone, i asked if they were serious about what they do and the lady said “we sure are” and i said what are you doing about the drunk drivers every sunday at 3 rivers (this was a few years back) and she follwed with about 5 minutes of studdering. i told her I have a 100 dollar bill when they are really cracking down on drunk driving instead od impeading people from gettin home. really, stop 200 cars and getting 3 people is stupid when they could probably go down there stop 100 cars and find 30. But yeah i’m not fun and getting drunk and stupid and going to the stillers game is the shizznit.
Field is part of the game, play on it… GB has a serious homefield advantage in the winter as well, as do most northern teams… It’s called home field advantage for a reason, part of the game play it instead of bitching about it… If you don’t think going to LA/Arizona and playing in 90+ heat is hard for people that are not used to that heat as well you are nuts.
Next thing you know QB’s are going to be wearing flags and you won’t be able to hit them…
because home field advantage has absolutely nothing to do with the status of the field… it deals with hometown fans and being in a familiar place to feel comfortable playing the game.
