Stock/Slightly modded 5.0? any fun?

I am kicking around the idea of picking up a early 90s 5.0 for the summer…just something to cruise around with…maybe some bracket racing at Lancaster…

Will I be extremely bored with one of these quickly?

If I don’t grab one of these in early summer/spring…I will probably pick up another LS1 car towards the end of summer.

Edit: I already have the mustang mentality so my attitude can’t get any worse…

I love mine and my car is almost all stock. nothing beats the sound of a 5.0 with a nice exhaust.

parts are a dime a dozen and very cheap, especially compared to LS1 parts. just dont forget that starting off stock that they are basically 15 sec cars, maybe high 14s. if that doesny bother you then go for it

I drove my friends lightly modded 91 I think it was. Anyhow I was bored within one minute of driving it. Dude what does a clean one sell for? 4-5k? You can buy clean ls powered f-bods for 5-6k at this point.
Not saying there aren’t fast mustangs because there are but for real look how many people mod the shit out of these things to run 12s. FUCK THAT

hmm

This is the response I was looking for…

:eekdance:

Sherm you realize that will make you a blue oval guy right?

The fun of Mustangs is modding them…that being said if you find a clean one for a decent buck it could be fun to take a 14 second car and put it deep into the 12’s/high 11’s with the right bolt-ons (H/C/I/gears/exhaust). Realisitcally, you could set this up for fairly cheap…

I don’t have any LSx experience, so I can’t compare…but I’d expect the fun factor to be similar.

well my old car ran 12.1 @ 111 with headers/stall converter/cold air intake/UD pulley/ported TB.

I guess I will do some research…see if I can pick up a 12sec 5spd stang locally…

But in the end…I will probably end up going the 6spd LS1 route…

If you’re bringing up the LSx vs. 5.0 arguement…let it rest. To get a fox body Mustang to run those numbers NA you’ll need to tear it down farther than you would an LSx car. However, I don’t think this would be a boring thing to do to the car for a summer…shit in one weekend you could wake the thing up!

Stock the cars are pretty much strangled from the factory, H/C/I and you’ll be able to have some fun. The fox bod’s should be lighter than an F-Bod, making up somewhat for the power difference. Depends on how much you really want to put into it I guess.

Of course you could always pick up the now Tigerless 5.0 pretty cheap!

I am not trying to build a drag car or a street racing car…just something quick to cruise around with…I would be happy with a 115ish trap…

I just don’t know if the 5.0 + mods is going to equal the same price as a LS1 + cam.

There seems to be so many Foxes out there that simply have a shitty combo…and never run fast. I seriously think it would be a good summer challenge to pick up a car like this, hit up the track as much as possible, tweak the combo, and make a goal of hitting 11’s on a car that previously couldn’t break into the 13’s.

NOt to say this is the only recipe…but I’ve seen it work before with the only tuning being adjusting FP and timing at the track:

*Start with a stock 302/T5, add the following:

AFR 165’s, FTI custom grind cam, 2 1/2" exhaust, 4.10’s, Edelbrock Perf. intake, 30lb. injectors, 70mm tb, 75+mm mass air.

With a raceweight of ~3200lbs. with driver you’ll see 115-117mph traps. Figure the above mods could ballpark at $2500 or so. Find a $3000 Fox + these mods and you’ll be entering LS1 purchase price territory.

Seems like you’ve dabbled with the LS1’s plenty, give the SBF a shot for a change:)

If I buy a fox and run those mods and don’t get anywhere near those traps I will never let you hear the end of it

I’ll just come back atcha with something along the lines of you’re a horrbile combo maker and you should go back to LS1’s:)

If you buy a stang we are no longer friends.

Fine I will just buy a honda hatch

Having had both and driven both I would take a fox bod any day for driving.

If i wanted to go fast the F-bod LS platform is hard to beat but they are fucking boats to drive and I just dont think they handle quite as well as a fox.

Something with the lenghty beak on an fbod upsets me behind the wheel where the fox is a bit stubbier up front.

The Fbods get the nod on the interior as the fox body mustang is just about the same as a late 80s escort.

Both are good…but sometimes it helps to stick with what you know.

I am sure driving by your house every day and seeing yours might inspire me to buy one…

Get motivated quick because I am moving in a month lol
