How is this thing possibly legal? I had no idea you could make a cr/kx500 street legal… As a matter of fact I didnt know you could make any 2 stroke dirtbike street legal?
It doesn’t matter if its 4 stroke or 2 stroke, it’s whether the MSO says “Off Road” or not. Some states allow off road vehicles to be titled for street use, NYS does not. Some people have luck with titling in other states first and then transferring it to NYS or getting an MSO that doesn’t say “Off Road”.
Just curious… What is an mso? lol… Also, im looking for a on off road dirtbike right now, as long as its st legal NOW im good right? DMV cant tell me its not registerable if its already st legal from the previous owner right?
Manufacturers Statement of Origin = MSO
I wouldn’t use a KX as an on road bike (or ANY high power 2 stroke for that matter) but thats just me. I would suggest looking at something like a KTM 690 Enduro thats a legit on/off road bike from the factory.
DMV could register the previously registered bike to you, however, in some instances (not sure about NYS) there have been title revocations done for this exact thing. Again, look into getting a legit on/off road bike and not an amateur conversion.
Honestly im just looking for a cheap shit to fuck around with, wr or drz or xr… something like 1500-2000. KTM “legit” on off rd bikes go for like 4-5k right? Plus I know you prolly think this sounds wierd but I dont like the look of them lol… I like the look of like a sporty dirtbike.
Word, I hear you. I’m partial to KTM, but there are several others that you can fuck around with. There are even cheap ass Chinese copies that you can get for <$2000 new that are street legal. Not sure what else you can find in that range, last I priced anything on/off rd was about 2 years ago.
I have actually been looking and have seen alot of bikes for around 2k, wr250’s, wr426, and alot of xrs… IDC about power, I just wanna get around town lol.
BTW, is there any way to tell on the title if its st legal so I dont get fucked? I def dont wanna just take someones word for it.
Most of them are going to be factory on/off roads so the concern isn’t really there. WR, KLX, DRZ, XLR etc. I wouldn’t worry too much unless its something like a KX/CR/YZ which were never intended for street use.
oo ok…
I think im leaning towards a WR… Im usually used to the more common bikes crf, yz-f, rm, rm-z, shit like that, but the wr looks pretty sick, really sporty…exept for the gay mirrors.
You just listed 4 not street legal motocross bikes. And that KX 500 would be a horrible street bike. Buy something street legal from the factory. WRs,DRZs,KTM motards…Me personally i would buy a KTM but they are expensive. Look for an older Suzuki/Yamaha 400 if you’re not looking to spend a lot.
DRZ won’t do anything “great” but it will do everything else very well and you can’t kill the motor.
If you don’t care for supermoto or street tires, go with an older DRZ as they been around forever without any major changes and you can pick one up easily for under 2 grand. The E had a different carb which had more power than the SM too, still street legal from the factory.
I have a soon to be for sale DR350 if interested.
Any “dirt bike” that came with a certificate of origin needs to go through the NYS process to get a VIN issues and a title for said VIN. Example, a run of the mill 2011 CRF450R is a race ready motocross bike, with a cert of origin. A DRZ400-SM is a production bike with a VIN and a title. Look on the neck of the bike, if it has a VIN, your good to go. If it has a serial number, good luck!
The days are gone where you can just throw the Baja “street” kit plastics; headlight low/high, turn signals, ONE rear view mirror minimally, running and brake light, and a horn on your “trail” bike and fill out some applications, MAYBE have it inspected by DMV and get issued a vin and a title.
The older ones, that say “street legal” demand they show you the title and vin… many sells will try to play dumb and pass the buck… “Ohh yeah its legal, I just didnt do it yet but you wont have a problem doing it yourself.”
And yeah a stroke 500 would be blown up in a week from cruising at 65mph on the highway. And everywhere else the powerband would either put you on the pavement or not move at all, specially with the 70-30 tires pictured (70% road, 30% dirt) which are more like death on the road IMO.
My uncle has ridden for 30 years, and worked 10 years making a living on bikes. When he tells me its a royal pain in the ass to title a dirtbike, I know I havent a shot in hell to pull it off in NYS.
BUTTTT. Vermont is a different story! CO’s arnt state by state restricted as much as a title is. You could sell it to yourself in VT (if thats even needed) and go through the process there. There is a reason you see a bunch of “on/off road” bikes blasting around NY with VT plates!
I miss my KTM625SMC!
Registering anything in Vermont is cake
Straight from VT website.
Does a person have to be a resident of Vermont in order to register a vehicle in Vermont? No.
http://dmv.vermont.gov/help#REG_Resident_to_register
One of the few states you don’t
Buttttt the issue comes in with insurance. You have to have insurance of the same state as residency and IIRC, your vehicle has to be registered in the same state as the insurer or your primary residency.
Don’t remember the details but generally speaking, you can get away with reg in VT and driving around in NY but you are violating some insurance technicality which they could get you for if they wanted.
Thats when you find a “friend” in VT, and they insure it there, like this place in MAINE for my trailer I build. I found a “company” that does just that in Maine for trailers. You find a way to bring the trailer there to get inspected, they issue you a VIN. You mail that VIN to the “company” and they register it for you and send you the documents and bills to pay. Also up there its a 5 year inspection and its DIRT CHEAP. So every 5 years you bring the trailer up there to have it inspected. Homebuilt trailer builders LOVE this.
Or you could simply get a PO box in VT. Have a bill, like a cell phone (you probably pay online or automatically anyways, so the bill just gets thrown out) sent to that PO box instead. Then when you go to register and insure the machine, put the PO box in the application, and if need be bring the cell phone bill with you for proof of “residency”.
Go there once in a while to empty the po box and your good. Or get a real friend in VT to just empty it and throw it out or mail it to you. VT is less than 1.5 hrs away if you dont make friends! lol
correct, I was just stating that those non street legal bikes I mentioned are what I am used to riding and would like something similar looking to them… Alot of street legal bikes are ugly as shit, I want a bike that still looks sporty and off road like the wr kinda… Kinda looks like a yz250f… And trust me, after getting rid of my cr500 I would never want to buy another 500 EVER again lol, just curious how he got it registered… I was fouling spark plugs, breaking pairs of shoes and getting stranded more then anything. Even with that decompression “mod” that thing is a bitch to start… I’ll stick with 4 strokes that I can fall off a 20 foot jump crash the bike on the floor and kick once and start back up lol.
Proof of residency is more complicated than that.
And as NY resident on your license you have to insure the vehicle you own in NY. IIRC.
If you’re trying to have a “pretty dirtbike” for the street, you’re doing it wrong.
good point, I can honestly say I havnt dont it, so its all “I was told” shit. :lol
and their are plenty of pretty dirtbikes for the street!
why did i sell that:'(
You know what I mean. 98% of population will not understand what they see and think of it as ugly. So will 99.9% of girls. They love plastics for some odd reason.
God I always found it odd how KTM’s have a chain on the right side.
Get another one, we’ll go riding! :number1
