Just wondering if anyone has some info they can share about buying on off road dirtbikes in different states…
If it has a STREET title in sayy California, does that mean I can easily just transfer the title to NY without doing anything like registering a car or do I need to do special shit?
Also, even in NY, how do I tell if something is street legal or not? I’ve seen so many people say it’s “almost street legal” meaning it has the blinkers, headlight, tail light ext but no street title…
last, how do people make shit thats totally NOT supposed to be street legal, street legal?? Like a kx500 I posted a few months ago, theres nooo way that thing should be st legal… but it was… how did someone do that?
in NY it needs a title to be registered and plated.
dirtbikes and most enduro’s only come with certificate of origin. NOT a title. Example a CRF450R has a CO. A DRZ400SM has a title. a DRZ400E has a CO.
Just putting the necessary stuff, plate bracket and light, signals, lights, horn, etc while those do make a bike “street legal” good luck having NYS give you a title to register it.
If it already has a title, it can be transferred as far as I know and have had friends and family do so. Popular way to get around NYS being stingy about titling a dirt bike was to get it titled in VT or somewhere and then have a friend sell it to you and transfer the title.
I havent personally done it. But I know people who have I trust. GD3Skiier might chime in he is our DMV guy here
how do people get street titles for like cr/kx 500’s and shit? Ive also seen ALOT of crf450’s that are st legal lately and would LOVE to have one of those.
whats he said. Generally the NYS DMV isnt the easiest people to deal with, my uncle wanted to put a KTM525EXC on the road and got denied.
Call a DMV and ask them what it will take. play dumb, I bought a Honda CRF450 and need to register it to put it on the road, all I have is a certificate of origin. Maybe even say it was already on the road in VT or something if they shoot you down.
MV82 you need to fill out and cross your fingers on when you get to the clerk.
here is the problem, you need:
NEW:
Retail cert of sale AND Cert of Origin
Used:
Original title showing transfer, OR
original transferable registration showing transfer AND
original bill of sale.
So since you dont have any of those things (unless you buy it new off the showroom) you go to this part:
the MV82TON is to apply for a title ONLY… DOES NOT ALLOW YOU TO register the thing for plates.
for that you need:
NEW: the cert of origin
USED:“Proof of ownership is usually a certificate of title,…If you have other proof of ownership , please contact the Title Bureau to find out if it is acceptable.”
quoted off the form.
thats your saving grace loop hole. Long process is have a friend file the MV82TON form like he bought the bike. Hope that the part in bold/underline works and they accept the MCO as proof of ownership and it gets titled.
then he sells you the bike/title. You go to DMV with title and all is well.
nah, singhs just picking it up lol, Im buying it… It’s a little small for me, but im not really looking for power, just a nice cruiser/wheelie machine. lol
If its coming in with a title and is branded as a motorcycle and not branded that its custome or anything it will be fine. It has to pass inspection though so it needs all the required safety equipment.
This is true when it comes to street bikes… I didnt buy a street bike, I bought a dirtbike…
If the the klx450’s were street legal you bet your ass I woulda bought that instead, but I couldnt find any Xr 400’s/600’s/650’s or drz’s ANYWHERE so I settled with what I could find…
Ask Singh, singhs cousin or Lance, I havent even registered the bike yet and im bored with it lol… Cant even pop the clutch and wheelie it, you gotta physically pull it up to get it up its so un powered lol.
Itll be fun in the trails and shit though once i can get some knobbies on it.
Lets make a rear set for the subframe. You can just 12’o-clock it around town! LOL
Yeah its a SX bike at heart. not much low end grunt out of the motor, not by size but by design. they are usually a mid to high rev motor for racing on dirt. if its a 6 speed its even worse. my KTM250SXF race bike was all mid to top end, 6 speed bangin shifts every sec. And its rider forward for planting the front tire into a berm and banging a corner.
