Student at UCLA Tazered

I agree, but based on the quote below, it seems “CSOs” and “police officers” are different?

It could just be poorly worded… (i know cso = campus security officer)

I’m not sure that the CSO’s would have the legal authority to remove someone from the campus. They also probably called the police in, to have more of an authority presence.

hahahaha “CSO’s”

Since when do you have to show an ID when using a public state school library?

who cares. in 99.9% of situations, follow rules and respect the cops (and other people), and u won’t get your ass beat. if u don’t respect them, too bad.

And everyone has to remember…

A taser is not designed, meant or used to inflict bodily harm on anybody. Taser’s are used only after verbal commands are ignored, and the officer needs to subdue the perpetraitor.

Its not like they were trying to hurt this guy. If they wanted to do that, they would have kicked his ass. They merely felt that their commands and presence was being ignored, and they upped the level of force.

In regards to the level of force an officer can use, it is one step above what the perp has or is doing.

So, first they verbally confront him. He ignores it and walks away. (his fault)
Then they grab him by the arm, he yanks away and starts to get all riled up (again his fault)
Then they subdue him with a control device (taser).

if you ask me, its all entirely his doing.

or…

just remember…

don’t bring your mouth to a taser fight.

It would be nice to see how it escalated. I would imagine the kid said something to set them off or was agressive. Kids/young adults have no respect these days. Last summer some punk slaps the side of my car as he walks by and when confronted, pulls a knife on me. Today’s generation has gone to hell. As for this crowd here on NYSpeed and UBRF, I do not see that. I see a lot of this kind of things downtown every day.

As for them threatening anyone that got close, it’s justified. 100 students v. a few cops, they have to protect themselves.

One other note, the camera man was a bitch. He should have gotten in their faces but he was trying to hide all the time.

for years now. and i’m pretty sure its not a public state school library.

you most likely need to be a student to use it. therefore they should have student ID cards on them.

thankyou.

anytime.

+1

especially to the last line.

LOS ANGELES — A UCLA police officer shocked a student with a stun gun at a campus library after he refused repeated requests to show student identification and wouldn’t leave, police said.
The student, Mostafa Tabatabainejad, was shocked Tuesday at about 11 p.m. as police did a routine check of student IDs at the University of California, Los Angeles Powell Library computer lab.
“This is a long-standing library policy to ensure the safety of students during the late-night hours,” said UCLA Police Department spokeswoman Nancy Greenstein.
She said police tried to escort Tabatabainejad, 23, out of the library after he refused to provide identification. Tabatabainejad instead encouraged others at the library to join his resistance, and when a crowd began to gather, police used the stun gun on him, Greenstein said.
Tabatabainejad was arrested for resisting and obstructing a police officer and later released on his own recognizance. He declined to comment Wednesday night.

LMAO at the bit the OP didnt post. The jackass was trying to start a riot.

lmao

fucking retard.

word… fuck 'em

Noone here was present, its almost impossible to see what went down prior to the tasering by the video, and most of you are obviously unable to read the news story which may or may not be accurate.

According the the news story, he didn’t show his ID to the campus security and when they left to get police, he gathered his stuff and started leaving. The police showed up and grabbed him on the way out. On the legalities of what happened, I dont know who is at fault… I am not a lawyer or judge.

If my opinion was asked, I would say that it depends if it is against the LAW to be inside the library without an ID.

am I the only person that thinks that was just a tad unecessary? sure, he may have deserved it once or twice, but I think that was a bit much.

They only shocked him twice, so by your own admission, he deserved it.

i feel as though he needed to leave when they told him to leave. but i think the cops exercised too much force from what was said so far. i’d like to see what happened before the video. like a security camera audio feed would be better than what the newspapers say.

Not necessarily. A lot of universities have their libraries open to the public. Sometimes it’s only certain libraries, sometimes it is every library. Every school I have visited has had at least one library that the public can use. This includes privately funded universities (which UCLA most certainly is not).

I couldn’t tell from the video whether or not the kid was getting belligerent and fighting back or not, but he sure sounded like he was. It’s a fine line. If he was just refusing to leave then the 3-4 cops that were there should have had no trouble dragging him out. If he was fighting back then they were justified to zap him to subdue him. That’s what it’s there for. It’s not like they beat him or shot him. He got zapped, it hurt, a minute later he’s fine. :cjerk:

Either way I have no sympathy for that dick bag.
