Subaru tuning issues.

(zips up protective suit against subaru owners)

prime example of why BMW>Subaru lol

getting prepared for cossey to tell me im the reason ppl hate bmw owners lol

i’m going to go out on a limb here…i would put my car on the line and say the problem stems from jay tuning his own car…i don’t care what anyone says…just because you read a little and talk to a few people that know what they are doing to a subby doesn’t mean a new jack is going to do it right…i would agree with a few posts that you don’t need a dyno for tuning but you do need to know what the hell you’re doing… you leave the tuning to someone that knows what they are doing plain and simple…granted he tuned he car for over a year…maybe most of the time it was ok…but just that one time could have been off…and boom…

Spoken by someone who obviously has no idea about engine management or tuning or logging.
Tuning is a lot more straight forward than several people may believe. Every vehicle has it’s quirks - but the principles applied are the same.
When you take an EFI 101 or Advanced class, they will teach you on say a Chevy Camaro. Doesn’t mean you’re not qualified to tune anything other than a Camaro because what you learn are the principles of tuning and how values counter and effect one another.
Jay is a VERY VERY smart man, and knows what does and doesn’t work. Is he the god of Subaru tuning? I never said that, but he’s not an idiot and would never lay into a pull that was knocking/pulling timing/running lean/ect ect.
A built motor would need to see a lot of constant det. or a really really huge fuckup by someone to pop a gasket that quickly.

This is opinion.

ok…douchbag…did i say he was an idiot…no…did i straight up say he doesn’t know whats he’s doing no…i said he may have been doing fine for over a year then something could have went wrong…and i’m sure if i wanted to learn how to tune a car i would…i have no intrest or time to lean so i leave it up to someone who does…plus when you have faith in your tuner you dont have to log and adjust shit every time you drive it. why did the car blow up the first time if he is such a great tuner??? plus this car has had issues… even before synapse touched it…i could really care less anyways…i was just stating what i thought…

id love to see the timing log when that car blew up… but im sure that got deleted.

A car tune is not like a set of automatic headlights. There is NEVER a “set-it-and-forget-it” method. If you have any modified car that has been tuned - and drive it year round - something as simple as the weather will DRASTICALLY alter your tune as the car will be taking in more/denser air along with running more boost (in a turbo’d application) where temp % corrections will have to be accounted for. And there is no name for name calling or making it personal, I’m just stating valid information.

jays car fell victim to the INFAMOUS cyl #4 ring land. he was running a 35r on a stock block for thousands of miles. easily double the hp of stock, with over a hundred drag passes at 25+psi on racegas and meth. STOCK subarus puke the cyl #4 ring land on a stock tune (not subarus strong suit). it is believed that the reason of this is due to fuel starvation because cyl #4 is the last to receive gas… thus in inherently runs leaner and any hint of DET will pop it and create poor compression numbers and a bad leakdown result. ask me how i know… same shit happened to me… but i can say with almost certainty that it was caused by a HORRIFIC tune by getadomtune.com… fuck that guy.

ok…i took it as you calling me an asshole…i know any tune in a car has to be changed with the weather…i know that first hand as it cost me 8k when i first got my car…maybe i shouldn’t have looked at it i my own sence…i know that when you have a car that is fast and fun to drive it’s hard to hold yourself back from beating in it, whether it’s the right time or not…me personally dont drive my car daily, but i do try to drive it as much as possible…and if i take my car out when the weather is adquate for the tune i dont beat on it…as it already cost me for that…i dont know how to tune but if i did i still wouldnt want to change the tune with every different weather change…i feel you would be just asking for problems no matter who you are…just seems like more of a headach… and as the above post stated about the meth…i wouldnt use that shit if it was that last thing i had…

so Travis what you are saying is it isnt at the fault of synapse, which is who this thread is directed towards.

Travis isnt very good at spelling out what he is trying to say… He was saying how the original engine blew, not the synapse setup.

synapse had nothing to do with the OEM motor. synapse built and installed the new motor… which they had some issues with, as jay previously stated. synapse has a great rep with the honda crowd (although swifty seemed a lil pissed earlier in this thread) but other than hondas and a few nissans, they seem to have a few issues here and there… that is to be expected. but comming out and blaming jay without any type of proof is assinine. i would trust jay to tune my car any day of the week. he knows that hes doing and on his OWN self tune holds one of the top 10 fastest times ever recorded on the stock turbo in an sti. he obviously is doing something right. it just so happens that i already got a tune by seth @ moon performance and i am VERY pleased with the results thus far and my motor isnt burning oil, isnt knocking and i seem to have PLENTY of fuel as my 850cc injectors are only at 67% duty cycle. (same injectors jay is at 90%+ or so.)

also just because you have a built motor…that doesnt mean that it’s bullet proof…

The reason is nothing of the sort. Cylinder 4 is actually the first to get fuel. Cylinder 3 is the last.

Subaru has purposely added more timing to cylinder 4. It varies from 0 to 3 degrees based on the engine in question, the load and RPM. This is done because the knock sensor is right next to cylinder 4. If they add extra timing to cylinder 4, then cylinder 4 is always the first to detonate. This ensures that detonation is caught early before it strikes all the cylinders at once. It also means that if they can keep detonation out of cylinder 4, there is no question that they can keep it out of all the cylinders (provided everything else is working properly).

Cylinders 4 and 2 receive approx 20% more airflow than the other cylinders as well. We discovered this when flow testing the factory intake manifold when we were designing our own intake manifold. This isn’t really an issue however because these same two cylinders have a longer, narrower exhaust runner which results in more back pressure on that side thus evening the flow numbers. However, some aftermarket exhaust manifolds fix the back pressure issue and cause cyl 2 and 4 to get more air. THAT makes them the lean cylinders.

oh, I almost forgot,

Jay, Want me to build you an engine?

Who are you? Do you own a shop? :ninja

that’s the guy that built my motor and tuned me to 480hp/535tq

too bad he’s in washington state

boo. I need a swap :nod

Bingo  Glad to see someone else knows a thing or two about boxer motors and the parameters that follow their layout. Fuel is hardly the issue. It’s bullcrap aftermarket parts that mess with the balance in reversion and flow of the motors. Very similar to the 3 + 3.3L turbo six’s from the 930’s and why I switch to the Carrera 3.2L balanced plenum when going EFI from CIS. Or just build my own v-stack piece in house for any Porsche planning over 600whp in the future :nod

Don’t even know this dom guy, but I like his talk already.

Honestly I’ve heard alot of negative things about you Dominic, but every time I’ve heard something straight from your mouth/fingers it seems more than evident that you know your shit through and through.

travis’ word hardly counts for anything and hes the only one I hear bad mouth everyone
