suspension questions

ok, so im a bit of a newb on suspesion terminology…i want to get the focus lower and handling better. im gonna do f+r sways, but im looking at two different suspension kits: D2, and NEX

slomies bought a NEX kit for his accord and im very impressed with them. however…

D2 comes with “pillowball” top mounts…what does that mean?

im not concerned with camber, as a complete camber kit for my car is under $75

pillow ball are like a ball and socket joint…thats my best description…they allow for better rotation and adjustablity…better than a standard bearing mount…i think D2s have camber plates integrated in the top mount…Rick has them on his DSM

i have d2 coilovers on my car and they seemed great, till i crashed. once it’s back together you can check them out. They came with front camber plates but they changed the design so no rear plates. :frowning: They seem alright, but bing has had some issues with them do a search for a thread by me entitled “thanks, mike” or something like that.

those D2’s look kick ass.

yeah i read that whole thread, i will def. take you up on checking yours out, plus i just want a ride in your car and see what drifting feels like lol. so DEF. let me know when your back on the road, ill throw some gas $$ your way or something

I personally have had minimal action with either lines, however I have heard mixed reviews on D2 just as an FYI. Some guys love them, and other’s say they are China’s BEST CRAP. So just as an FYI.

Good luck fella!

Pillowball top mounts are designed with performance handling in mind. OEM are rubber mounted bearings (if any) and this rubber flexes quite a bit. This is great for reducing noise and vibration, but not so good for feedback+handling purposes.

Pillowball mounts use an aluminium plate (usually) as the top damper mounting, with a spherical bearing used as the means to keep it attached flexibly yet rigidly to the top mount.

Good: Better feedback
Bad: More NVH (Noise/Vibration)

The last set of D2 coilovers we put on came with Tein Pillowball mounts recommended by D2, and didn’t even fit the dampener rod (incorrect diameter) and were unusable. (Get a matching suspension!)

well boths setups are a complete kit, no mix/match…i cant tell from the pics but from the sounds of it the NEX might have pillowball mounts as well. they are comparable designs, now just to figure out which one is a better bang for the buck

If it comes with top hats it’s got pillow balls.

hell yeah then lol, they do (the fronts anyway)

looking at this pic, i would say that they dont… They appear to use the stock top hats.

you can see the camber adjustable top hats of the d2’s here:

if it were between those two i would pick up the D2…

yeah just because of the camber i might lean toward those, but in the NEX kit, the strut on the right is the front, and there is a top hat there if you look hard enough trough the plastic.

that’s an upper spring cap, not a top hat. Top hat will have 3 studs at the top of it.

ok, D2’s it is, once i have cash that is. the only other options are cup kits (no hieght adjustability) or tein S-tech’s that adjust just the spring, rather than having the bottom thread on to the bottom of the shock body, and i dont like that style because then the spring is all sloppy when your trying to put the setup on the car, and it makes me feel like if you ever kit a big bump and unload the suspension the spring might lose contact with the perch and land in the wrong place.

K-Sports are very similar to D-2s

i cant find a kit for my car by them, but their big brake kit for my car =:jawdrop:

wow, $1200…those D2’s are $700

if u find Ksports on ebay they run the same as D2s…just another option for ya…i prefer D2s better though

even here they are 200 more…go for the D2s.
